AR XA Thrust Plate

What is it? Where is it? How do I replace it? Where do I get a new one?

I've read numerous posts about XA thrust plates and the need to refresh them but that's the end of it. Is this some kind of inside joke that I'm just not privy to?

Actually, I'm guessing they reside in the bottom of the bearing well and the bearing rides on it.

Neither of my XA's have had thrust plate service done on them. But, they're only 45 years old so I don't know.

I float them out with brakleen (red can) when i'm going through subchassis service. The ballend of your spindle will need refinished also. If not, the wear pattern on that end will wear a new delrin surface rapidly. You also want to remove (if you haven't done so already) the old crusted up foam material at the top of the bearing well. If not, it will continue to contaminate the bearing well, scuff the spindle, and cause wear at the thrust.

I have long ago removed the old foam material. I am in the Columbus area (South Marion). I did some polishing if the spindle some time ago as well, including the ballend. I take it the thrust plates are delrin - plastic? The ballend will eventually deform it then? You make your own thrust plates?

Yes, the thrust plates are acetyl Delrin. a little tougher than original plain delrin. It will get a slight compression dent after a period of time. The originals, due to debris, and original (non)finish of the spindle will have a crater. Yes, I make them.
 
Yes, I have been meaning to visit Marc for some time. I was actually in Columbus today but my wife was having outpatient surgery on the east side. I'd like to procure a couple of his thrust plates for my tables - at the very least.
 
I also highly recommend visiting Marc in person. He will always go the extra mile to help you. You won't regret it.
 
Magnepans are mildly awful. They tell you just how bad a recording is, or how crappy your gear is. Glad I don't have room for a set, otherwise I'd have to spend more money to upgrade things :)

true that, I miss the old house where i had a 32 x 16 x 10 foot stereo room, and was running two sets. Now i have to settle for one set in the stereo room, and the other set has to stand beside the Sony big screen in my TV room. And I have two GAS amps sitting idle.:(
