AR-XA with cryptic mod--what is it?

Scored this AR-XA for a steal at $60, but it's got this machined part on its surface with a spring on it. What could it be?

See it on the bottom right there? The spring unscrews and detaches, but the bottom piece appears to be fixed to the top plate. It looks to me like the pulley for a two-motor AR-XA, but this is a one motor model.

That was a stylus cleaning brush. Robbins model PB-3. It was on a spring so when used on a changer, the return action of the arm would contact the brush, but not be a "hard" obstacle as it swept the stylus during the automatic cycle.

Aha! Question: what is a changer? And this model doesn't have an automatic return, does it? If it does, mine doesn't work.

You have a completely manual turntable. Which is why the addition of that brush is odd. It wouldn't be used normally on a unit like that.

This was a (typical) changer:
