AR28S Crossover Capacitors

I'm part way through refurbishing my AR28S loudspeakers - they have been refoamed and I have fitted new RCA binding posts.

Looking to replace the 8uF 50V capacitors in the crossovers but can't find a UK supplier - not sure which type to go for? A 10% tolerance seems acceptable but how important is the 50V?

Any point in replacing the crossover Inductors?

Links to crossover upgrade projects would be welcomed.

The voltage can be higher without any issue, 10% is also acceptable.

Thanks Steve - so an 8uF 250V would be o.k.

Apologies for the newbie questions but is that AC or DC voltage?

Any advice on capacitor make/type?

Donald

Make sure they are non-polarity (often marked NP) and they won't have a positive or negative terminal marked.

If you go with 250 V, it won't matter if the rating is for AC or DC. That's way overkill. Won't make them sound any better, but it shouldn't hurt either.

As to brand, everyone has their favorites. I go with what's cheap and have not been let down yet, but it's your call.

AR-28S are very nice speakers, by the way. Congrats!

Thanks WJ - you've answered lots of my questions there and some I hadn't even thought of!

Need to find a UK supplier now.

What's the consensus on the need to replace the inductor coils?

The coils don't wear out; if they're physically undamaged, keep 'em. If you've got resistors in your crossover, you may or may not need to replace them, but typically not.

Are Wilmslow Audio still in business? Their web site is still up. An 8.2uF polyprop capacitor would work in your crossover, you probably wouldn't notice the difference between that and an 8uF, and they're less than a fiver each.

Thanks Lee - looks like Wilmslow Audio are alive and well - found the 8.2uF polyprop capacitors.

I like the look of their crossover kits - anyone contemplated these for AR28S speakers?

Donald.
