All,
I've been doing quite a bit of yakkin' over on the Turntable Forum about my recently acquired Linn LP 12 turntable, an original 1974 model given to me by a friend that sat in a cardboard box in his basement for thirty-plus years. The turntable, not my friend... he sits around upstairs. Upgraded to the Karousel bearing, the Lingo hybrid internal/external power supply, a SoTA Pyxi phono stage, and a Hana Mk II moving coil cartridge. Blown away is an understatement. But as I'm starting to get over how awesome a fifty-year-old Linn "sounds", it occurs to me that I couldn't here it at all without those wonderful, 70's vintage AR3a's I bought from a guy in a parking lot a couple of years ago. That started the whole "Vintage" thing with me, trying to assemble a system centered around the 3a's that I had back in college in the mid-70's. I ran them with some pretty nice gear including Technics, Thorens, Dynaco, and others and they always sounded great, but I don't think they've been truly unleashed until now, if you can believe it. I had them re-capped and the woofers rebuilt at Van L Speakerworks in Chicago, everything else is original. I've been through that whole story in these pages as well and it's a long one, but now I think I'm realizing the full pay-off. I wanted a 70's-centric rig as that's when I got into HI-Fi in a serious way, but it had to start with AR3a's. The Linn was an awesome (and as it turns out, expensive, even though it was "free") surprise that fits into that era perfectly. No way I could afford an LP 12 then, but having one now has opened up those AR's like I can't believe. I'd love to hear any AR stories, paths, trials, tribulations, and triumphs that any of you have experienced with 3a's in particular, and what gear you like to run them with here in these "modern times". Thanks for your feedback, the folks on this site are the best, and PLEASE GO VOTE TOMORROW IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!!!
Thanks!
