AR7 refoam spacer?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of refoaming a pair of AR7s. I've stumbled on something I've never seen in my refoaming experience, and which I cannot find in any video or pictures of people refoaming AR speakers. Once I removed the foams and started scraping the cones, I noticed that a rubbery plastic ring came off of the cone, where the old foams had been. It has the consistency of hot glue, maybe a little less stiff. Is this old glue that was cohesive and given some structure by the old foam, or is this an intentionally glued on ring for some reason? Based on the order of what came off, I think it was on top of the foam, not under it.

Any guidance would be great!

So I looked again with fresh eyes and it really looks like glue, I think I'm going to toss them.

If I understand correctly, this is what Scootsity57 is about.
 
Scootsity57, now that I remember, I am sending you another photo, of a pair of my untouched and original AR7s (which I keep this way and I do not refoam: I have 3 pairs of these speakers) in which you see the woofers with the ring above the foam .

That's just as surround treatment.

It's nice when it all comes off like that, without overly upsetting the edge of the cone.

This is the ring I was referring to. So it's just glue on top of the foam? Is it there for any reason? Should I add a bead of glue on top of the foam?

Hello Scootsity5, here is a thread that I had opened some time ago just to ask for the function of the elastic ring, unfortunately only one answer to date, however from an Italian "Guru", but nothing else, I agree with GD70 that it is not necessary to rebuild the ring!

I'm pretty pleased with the result. I got a remarkable amount of old wax and nasty crap, paint, etc off the vinyl on the cabs using barkeepers friend, and the refoam came out great. I also recapped them, they sound pretty great. This picture of the woofers may be from before I glued them.
Brassoing the AR7 badges was remarkably rewarding. They sparkle! I've just about given up cleaning the grills. I did a little vacuuming and some foamy carpet cleaner, but I'm afraid to get any more aggressive.
