AR9 speakers

Just curious, why replace the caps? Can you tell when your caps need to be replaced? I've got a pair of AR9s that still sound amazing and are in great shape, all i did was a re-foam - also bought my dad a pair off CL and did a re-foam all around on those - they sound great as well.

Is it obvious when you need to replace caps? I've heard of doing this on guitar amps to fix hums and buzzes i think?

There are two xover boards in each AR9, the lower board on the bottom is for the low pass side of the design, the upper board is for the upper half. I have found that the lower half seldom ever need attention with those large beer can caps- however the smaller electrolytic caps up above have aged sufficiently to need replacing. They were 10% to start with- you can do much better! To test them get a CLR meter and check them for drift/ tolerance. My caps were of 25%+!! An obvious cap replacement is a swollen cap or a leaking cap but that is seldom obvious. If you let you caps drift to far from spec you can blow a mid or tweeter which is $$$ IF you can find them!
