Are Boron Cantilevers Becoming Extinct?

I'll probably break down and open the XL-88D. How can you not? A one-piece stylus and cantilever from diamond is something that has to be tried.
That's just nuts (the one piece needle, I mean). Gad I miss those days....

I did a quick Google on the XL-88D some one commented in Germany it cost at the time as much a VW bug .
Think of the time it took to cut that diamond .

Anyone know the resonant frequency of carbon?
According to the brochure for the Nag JT-555 cartridge which uses a CF cantilever, the stiffness/density ratio is roughly 3x higher than Al. Don't know if that answers your question, but one presumes the Fs would also be 3x higher.

Just a guess though. From listening to the cartridge I find it's clearly not as stiff as boron.

I did a sweep test of the 555 when it was on my deck. It showed an unusually high peak approaching 20kHz, relative to any other cartridge I tested. I can't say this was audible, but of interest, at least.

carbon (powder)? carbon(diamond)?
non-important figure. the more important figure(s) are length, diameter, material rigidity, density. Then use this..........

Use the formula v = λf to find the resonance frequency of a single continuous wave. The letter "v" stands for the wave velocity, whereas "λ" represents the distance of the wavelength. This formula states that the wave velocity equals the distance of the wavelength multiplied by the resonance frequency. In manipulating this equation, resonance frequency equals wave velocity divided by the distance of the wavelength.

Then you need to know not only the bending modes of the 1st order, (harmonics) but then the bending modes of the second order. A cantilever is under both. The first order due to initial load (vtf) the second order due to wave modulation of right and left while simultaneously carrying 1st order.
Due to the harmonics generated in the first order, there will be multiple wave velocities.

now to really screw the pooch.......is determining wave reflection from mixed boundary. one boundary is diamond to vinyl, the other boundary is far end of cantilever. (we hope the diamond mounting to the cantilever doesn't introduce a third mixed boundary)

Sounds simple enough:rflmao:

Thanks for the details on what it takes to figure it out.

Lots of cartridges selling for that or more these days. None of them have a one piece needle.
I agree it's very special..had the non diamond version in my hot little hands at one point..could of had it for 500..been regretting that decision, probably was a Boron cant. in that.
