Are CS-77's good if restored??

The box is not big enough either for the 15 inch woofer but this is leagues better than the 77. Maybe the A series are all around better. These speakers(the 99as) are much maligned but I am enjoying them. I am not gonna recap...it may take down the value. These consistently sell for much money online.


I found a pair in great condition for $55 at the SA last week. FBs on all drivers.
I tried to love my 77s. And some stuff did sound great but not enough to get over the harshness of the tweeter.

What salvation army? SD isn't that long of a drive for me. I might be down with $55 just for the boxes.

Also, my big dilemma is that I have a nice set of Pioneer SP-FS51-LR's (Andrew Jones designed) that sound fantastic....I just wanted a look that matches my SX-1500TF, but don't want to sacrifice sound quality. Tall order huh?

All I had to do is connect the wires after opening up the holes a little to insert the Infinity and the JBL. Pulled the JBL out of a small pair of 2600's and the Infinity Polydomes from E-Pay for around 40.00 bucks, they really sound clean and really made the 77's keepers. :thmbsp: My Bad as that saying goes,my 77's are actually A's fiber beat. The change did make a big improvement.

I had a pair of CS-77 and thought they were way to harsh on the tweeter and the midrange did not in anyway make up for the lack of bass. The woofer is too large for the enclosure. I recapped them also and it really made no difference.

Picked up some CS-99A's last week.
Way way better.

I am contemplating having all 4 of mine recapped. The highs on mine are fine, for I use an eq.
Was there any difference in the low end, more audible ?
The 12 inch in the 77 fits the cabinet. The 15 inch in the cs 99a does not fit, as the cabinets are nearly the same size.

I ended up Converting my CS-77's to a sealed box. Removed the stock wimpy 12" woofer and installed a Dayton DC300-8 woofer. Rewired the crossover network based on a schematic from another forum, but left the wiring for the tweeter in place.

I Improved the bass greatly and tamed that raucous midrange. Could it be tweaked more? Yes, but its good enough for a shop speaker. It also killed that high sensitivity it once had, but it sounds much better.
