Are self-loading reels bad for tape?

At the end of a self-loading reel (the reels with 3 metal grippers and no slots) the tape was all stuck together for 30 feet or so and had crinks in it, losing emulsion with clear spots.

Do you think this was caused by the self-loading reel or just tape decomposition?
