Are the Electo-Voice T35 tweeters any good?

I recently acquired some EV SP12B woofers, T25 drivers with 8HD horns and some T35 tweeters (all 16 ohm) with plans of building some boxes to put them in and enjoy.

I have read some things online about the T35 tweeters that is a little discouraging though. Some folks say they have little response over 7k. Could that be true? I have always believed that they were highly regarded, but maybe I'm wrong.

Any thoughts/opinions?

I've always liked them; they've been in and out of my life for at least 45 years, beginning with home-built cabinets in which I paired them with Jensen 12" Flexairs and Electrovoice 2-way, 16 ohm crossovers back in the early 1970s. There are those who say they are on the shrill or bright side; I've never found them to be that. I've also heard there was variability in manufacturing, with some better than others. I use a pair of them daily in my NAS Squires, they sound wonderful. IMHO, they do a great job with cymbals of any kind. I also like the T25 mids. You've got potential there.

I have a pair of SP12 woofs (8 ohm), but they don't have the 'B' suffix--does 'B' mean 16 ohms?

They go out to around 15-16k... and I cannot say whether they're "any good" or not. I can tell you that I find them unpleasantly harsh. Crossing them over much higher than EV did (which was ca. 3.5 kHz, if memory serves) might help a lot, though.

The top-end version, the EV T350, is pretty highly regarded; opinions on the T-35, T-35B, and TW-35 are decidedly mixed.

You didn't ask for any advise :-P but FWIW, I'd suggest looking at Fostex current production supertweeters to put on top of your other EV drivers. I haven't tried that pairing myself, but I do use a pair of Fostex T90A with my Duplexes (crossed in at 10 kHz and padded a bit) and I am (after a fair amount of fiddling) pretty happy with them in that application.

EDIT: The Fostex lineup.

I have a pair in my RSL 6600-H's and am completely happy with their sound quality. The do have a bit of "edginess" (more pleasant euphemism for harshness) which I'm accustomed to so it's not an issue. They will play cleanly and loudly on just a teensy bit of power. I'm running all solid state gear so tube equipment would probably mellow them out a bit.

I've gotta much these sale setup (except regular SP12 with the chrome baskets) in ported 5cf cabinets with scratch built copies of the stock xovers...

I'm very please with them behind my Fisher x 100.... Although I AM running "lpads" set at about 1 o'clock on both the mids and tweets

I pulled a set out of some Speakerlab 4's. I am from the "harsh sounding" school to my ears. The Speakerlab Designation was HT3500. They also used the HT350 with the much larger magnet in some of their designs. Never considered the "Crites" upgrade to be cost effective for my use, as I didn't care to keep my speakers stock.

I replaced mine with Eminence APT-50 Super Tweeters.

My T35's are sitting around in storage gathering dust.

I like them. I have them in most of the Klipsch products I own and several other brands of speakers. I have heard them sound harsh, but it went away when changing amos/receivers. I never felt the need to change them. Currently running them in my Klipschorns, La Scala, Belles, and KP-201.

I have used them in a number of EV home built projects and have always enjoyed them as have friends who have heard them. I also like the newer ST350's which have a wider dispersion pattern and therefore better imaging. JOHN

I love them. Using them with EV X36 crossover in some custom cornerhorns with 15B woofers and 1824 mids + X8 crossover between those. Never perceived any harshness.

I have said this before. We all hear a little differently. I have heard many people say the T35s sound harsh. I never have. I think it's due to hearing differences between people. JOHN

I wonder if they are more harsh when they're asked to dig deeper than they should, maybe they should be capped at a higher crossover point.
