Are the vintage Sony receivers any good?

Is that so? Never heard this before but it is one of my favourite amps! Got is as not working unit but after resoldering everything it worked perfectly

The TA 1150 was considered to be as good, or better by some, as the Macintosh of the time, hence the nickname. The TA came out when I was just 2 or 3 years old, but I've read extensively about vintage Sony since the '80's, when I assembled my first system. The TA series is much sought after by die hard Sony fans. The lack of a good PR dept for Sony during that era is why the majority of Sony kit hasn't sky-rocketed in price currently. Check reverb or the bay for used and you'll see what I mean. The V5 I currently own will be with me for many years to come.

I had an STR-6055 for a while. It was an excellent receiver, and really beautiful with the green on black lighting and the wood case. I sold it to fund a Pioneer SX-737 to match my speakers and turntable. What I remember most about the Sony was the crystal clear highs, which made it really well suited for jazz in particular, in my opinion.

As others have said, a nice thing about Sony receivers is that you can get them at a much more reasonable price than Marantz, Pioneer or Sansui. I paid a little more than 2X as much for the Pioneer than I did for the Sony. While I love my Pioneer, I don't think it sounds anywhere near 2X better than the Sony.
