Are the vintage Sony receivers any good?

10years later have a question in mind? In 2012
i get a Sony 7065 at a local thrift store for $10.

I was there when new electronic came in...So
the first one to saw this Sony 7065.

But i do’nt keep it very long because i do’nt
like is sound. Many years later a get a Sony
Str-Gx 49es and i love it great sound.

Today as the price for big model Pioneer, Marantz rise up... What to know beetween
the V5, V6 V7 or 6800/ 7800 will you prefer
from Sony receiver?

By my own experience, this is madness. Just my opinion. The 7065a I was lucky enough to own was pure magic. Was it healthy?
 
Don`t remember the Sony ~ 50watt per ch. receiver model I bought cheap with one channel blown up in 1975, but after I repaired it, and used it for 3 yrs, until I went to separates, and then gave it to my parents, w a cheap turntable & my Rectilinear speakers, to upgrade them from their 1962 Magnavox console, and my younger sister cranked the crap out of it .

It was still functioning properly, when in the early 2000`s, I again upgraded my parents, to a remote control capable brand new RS receiver, with RS Minimus 7 walnut speakers, and a RS sub.
And then, I then gave the Sony receiver to my long time friend, who didn`t have a stereo.
And other than replacing the shorted bridge rectifier in 2010, probably because his old house didn`t have grounded outlets, so surge/spike protection would not be effective, thus he had none.
Anyway, he used that receiver, until his death around 3 yrs ago, his foolish older brother probably either sold it for peanuts(like he did with most of the estate), or kept it, I didn`t ask him.

I'm thinking like onwardjames, there was probably something wrong with that 7065. I remember reading that some think that era and series was Sony's attempt to compete with the McIntosh at the time, using some of the same design. I have the 7065 and 7075, sounds good but I guess that's just an "imo".
 
In my opinion, the "McIntosh era" was that associated with Sony 6200, 6120 and 6060.

The build quality of these were just over the top, fantastic.

it very well possible that the Sony 7065 was not
as original electronic because i remember
when i open the top cover i saw some extra cap
soldering in a bizarre ways not on the PCB

Anyways i sold it soon after. My experience with
Sony GX 49es receiver was better. The first time i test
it i compare the in build tuner with a Kenwood tuner
and the Sony tuner was better. Sony win!!!

Later that night i plug AKG 240 df headphone .( VG)
i get a DJ night radio no stop music and the sound was so
good that i stay on this radio station all night... way over
midnight.

I sold the Sony es to my twin brother so if i got the chance
to found the Gx10es or 9es will buy it.

I want also share that i have read a lot of AK tread
about vintage receiver and found JVC FAN tread
So now îm also trying to found a Ax-9.

i saw a JVC ax-5 for $55( broken door).

So thank you to all of you AK member who share your experience
with vintage gear this was an inspiration for me...
 
Well my Sony vintage comes from the late 80's..... But none-the-less, still top of the line with exceptional build!
 
Old thread, and I haven't read all comments, but, I'll just add this if it hasn't been said already- The vintage Sony kit was and is still on par with the other big names in audio gear of the times. They could stand toe to toe with Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui and the rest. The reason you don't see the prices so high for their vintage gear, is not because they were lesser quality or didn't sound as good. In the "60"s and "70"s, Sony didn't have the best advertising dept here in the states, or maybe they didn't put the effort into making a name for themselves here in the states for whatever reason. If you look back in vintage audio publication, Sony didn't go for the "front page" ad spaces. It just didnt seem to be important for them to run with the other big 3. I'll say this for that oversight on their part, they missed out on plenty of sales. Currently, I have a STR V5 in fully working condition. I've had Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui and Yamaha in the past. All sounded beautiful. Which one sounded best would just be my opinion, akin to my favorite flavor of ice cream. My advice would be listen to each flavor, on equal grounds, then choose your favorite. I have a sony ta-1150 and I love it. For me there are only two kinds of amps...the ones that make me smile and the ones that dont. This one does...and it looks fantastic!
 
Depends, as others who've experienced them...the lower tiers not so good, the uppers could hold their own. Any I've had put out decent results.

Like any other make, there's some duds in the mix, yet others shine when asked to produce.
