Are these vintage TANNOY? Please help identify these speakers.

Hi there. I need help identifying speakers that caught my eye:

I do not have any other photos and much else to go on other than they are made in England, they are from the 70s or earlier, and they apparently are 60/80W speakers. I asked the owner for more details, but he does not remember and he has the speakers stored, so it might be a while before he gets back to me with details. There is the name 'Edinburgh' he knows is somewhere on his system, but he also has a stereo cabinet with Marantz receiver and tape deck in it that has a plaque with the name 'Edinburgh'

Now these definitely do not look like Tannoy Edinburgh I saw, but they do look similar to Tannoy GFR monitors. Can anyone confirm?

all I can tell you for sure is that you have one cabinet right side up and one reversed, driver up works best but I am sure this was a quick picture so you could get some info. Good luck on your quest. Perhaps try a few of the Tannoy sites for an ID. You can always pull a driver and you will find info stamped on the driver. Short of that take a picture with the grill removed and post here. Best regards Moray James.
 
Yes, I noticed that one speaker is upside down.
As far as a closer inspection is concerned, if only it could be that easy...

The owner lives 3 hour drive away, to top that and has these speakers stored away (has to drive himself to check the cabinet dimensions), and he is an older person afraid to remove the grills, not to mention taking out the drivers. I asked him to go and at least try to check the dimensions and see if there is anything more on the plaque than 60 Watts and 'Made in England' but until he gets back to me I got nothing more, and chances are that he will not have any additional info other than cabinet dimensions.

So, really, this photo is all I have to go on to determine if they are worth the trip. I basically need to confirm if these are 70's Tannoys - any Tannoys - because this would make the price really good and well worth driving to pick them up, whatever shape they are in. If they are anything else, it's a waste of time and money. That's why I'm hoping to find someone who can id them based on this photo and the little info I do have.

What makes me think of Tannoys is the cabinet build (what little can be determined by the grill openings behind the fabric), and wattage consistent with Tannoy HPD 315 driver (I did some more googling in the meantime). He's selling it with a 1978 Marantz receiver, so the vintage would also check with the production period of this driver. Cabinets are apparently made in England, so it looks like they are also originals from the 70s. Tannoy forums are no joy so far, there are good pics of earlier Tannoys, and only few of Tannoys from the late 70s. These look somewhat similar, but still inconclusive.
 
They look like Celestion speakers to me.

Too bad it is a logistical nightmare to get more info. Frustrating to say the least.
 
They look pretty small for Tannoys of the older sort, based on how high they are compared to the credenza behind them, and the wires bunched up on the floor. Look basically bookshelf sized, and the Tannoys that most people get excited by are considerably bigger than these appear in the photo, at least to my eyes.
 
Look like Leak or Radford..
Both brands used metal trim in those days.

Agree that these are probably some 25x15'' cabinets, maybe smaller, depending on the credenza. Hopefully I will get dimensions tomorrow. They could have a 10'' or a 12'' driver. This excludes a 15'' older Tannoy driver, but not the HPD 315. The fabric on grills is much closer to what I've seen on Tannoys than on Celestion, so do the two holes in the grills, it kind of looks like something one would build for a concentric driver.
 
I do not think it's metal trim, its probably just flash reflection (not bright enough to be reflected from metal, and the pic is definitely taken with a flash). But I will ask the owner that when I call him tomorrow. Metal would also rule out Tannoys.
 
They could possibly be Tannoy Cornetta's. Too tempting to pass up the drive to inspect them. Go quickly.
 
They could be even smaller I guess - 12" wide or so, with something like a 10" woofer. At least that's my educated guess based on that credenza. I mean, how big is that likely to be? I'd say maybe 90 cm wide or so, with about 1/3 of the width still visible behind the speakers. That would leave around 30 cm for each speaker. Height... maybe 60 or 70 cm including feet?
 
Every time I start getting excited about a mystery speaker, it turns out to be a Utah something or other... :sigh:
 
They are not Tandbergs. They're made in England. Agree they could be 12'' wide with a 10'' woofer.
 
Mystery solved. They are 3-way speakers called 'Box Edinburgh', either made in Germany or for the German market. The owner checked the plaque and it turned out he was wrong about the 'Made in England' bit, he thought they were English due to the name Edinburgh. He found DIN standard info instead. Pass.

Well, I guess it was too good to be true. At least I didn't get overexcited enough to drive 3 hours to find that out.
