Are these worth $20??

I'm thinking about going and checking these out. The guy selling them assures me they are in excellent condition. They are homemade, but seem very well put together. The woofer looks fairly generic, but the horn-loaded dome mid looks interesting. I think the tweeter might be a Philips.

Anyone recognize the drivers?

From the picture, it appears they look nice, and if they sound good, I'd say $20 would be a fair price.

i think that's the audax dome midrange that is occasionally used as replacement for the oft-broken infinity quantum dome midranges.

The guy has told me that he put these together about 12 yrs ago, using components from a speaker shop that sold raw components. He thinks the mids are Philips, but I have never before seen a Philips mid resembling the one in the photo. He doesn't know what the tweeters are. This fellow needs some memory lessons. He also thinks that the woofers are Kicker, which I believe are car speakers. Not necessarily a bad thing, I guess, although impedance may be low. I can always replace the woofers, and I do have some nice M&K tweeters I can put in as replacements if necessary.

The cabinets were put together by a cabinet-maker using countertop material backed by 3/4in. mdf. Nice job.

Even if everything else sucked, those CABINETS are worth far more than $20!

If you did nothing but rip everything out and build a different DIY speaker into those cabinets, you'd probably still do well having only paid $20! That's less than the bare wood to make that cabinet (minus veneer!) would cost!

Regards,
Gordon.

the case its self looks fairly nice but id give them a listen and if they don't sound like something you would want to spend $20 just say thanks but no thanks not what i am looking for

Philips made a square flanged midrange dome in the late 1980s/early 1990s - it was the same motor as their classic 2" dome with a different faceplate. When crossed over properly it was a very smooth sounding driver. It's definitely a Philips tweeter. Hard to see from the pic (just had an eye exam and my pupils are still dilated :D ) but, if the woofer has a flattened voice coil cover, it could be an Eclipse unit and if so, their 10" was a very nice driver in its day.

$20? Go get 'em. :thmbsp:

Some of you guys would make very good detectives. I thought the woofer dust cap was flat, but you confirmed it.

I feel as Gordon W does about the cabinets. They are worth the money by themselves.

Thanks very much for the input.
