Listening to (and worse yet, buying into) whatever imaginary world philosophers happen to think we're living in at the moment, is a damn fine way to wind up with a very real shotgun in one's mouth.

I for one am entirely too busy to bother with this sort of (if a tree falls/chicken or egg) philosophical twaddle.

Uhh-huh...Quoted for truth. I took a philosophy course in college, & it, without a doubt, was the biggest waste of time-and money- that I was ever associated with. Shoulda tooken a Kreeaytiff rietin' korse, so's I coulda learnt t'Riet Good...

I like to think about philosphical stuff, and other moral quandrys, but in the case such as this, i've thought about it, and decided to occupy my time with other things. There are several ways to take this topic, most of which makes it more sense to not believe it.

For one, the amount of computing would be so bizarrely huge that it wouldn't be possible*. You could program trends into "people", but there are so many abnormalitys that the sheer amount of "program" for even a neighborhood would require such tremendous effort that it would be unweildy. Take into account that any creature/race to own such a computer would have to take the time to devolp it much like ourselves, I doubt they would survive long enough to devolp a computer to simulate to such a scale and of such complexity, I don't think we will ever (note people of the future; don't quote me on this;)) create a computer and program of such magnitude before the sun goes.

*(keep in mind each "person" could have a infinite amount of variables, and even a gram of dirt would have a huge amount of information)

Another thought; any and all programs have glitches, what of the human or world program?, there are abnormalitys, sure, but nothing to the extent of a computer glitch...a abnormality is an explainable mistake, or something like that, however, a glitch would be clearly evident by a large group of people...no program runs perfectly all the time. To avoid hardware failures, parallel systems could process a wordly program, however, this goes back into point one of a impossible computer. I don't count ufo sightings, etc. as a glitch...a glitch would be clearly evident, through whatever means a large mainframe could show. (blue screen of death perhaps?:D)

I much perfer the "so what" approuch....if you are a program, then you are doing pretty well for yourself, especially being so unique in your life, the ultimate A.I., human.

also keep in mind this theory can be only recent, as computing, and the dea of it, has only come about in the last 100 years or so.
 
Believe it or not, I was in a meeting today where this possibility was actually discussed.
 
I don't know about being in a simulation but I sometimes think that we are God's version of the ant farm I had when I was 12. I cared for their world from Christmas until Summer, then went off to spend the summer with my grand parents. I totally forgot about the ants until I came home. They were all buried in the ant graveyard except one..who had nobody left to bury him. Right about now, God might be on vacation somewhere thinking "Oh no! The Earth! I forgot about Earth! I bet they're killing each other and destroying the whole place!"
 
I dunno...Maybe we ARE artificial...When I was a kid, I figured I was made in Kingsport...They had a building up there on the way to my pediatrician's, that just "Looked" to me like it mighta been a Baby Factory...I mean, Mama took me up there to get Worked On, why wouldn't they make 'em up there, too ?!? Being posessed of an automotive mind, I envisioned an assembly line where they stuck legs, arms, heads onto bodies...Never did quite figger out how they "Turned 'em on", & a few other fine points, but MY explanation made a HELLUVA lot more sense to me than the twaddle that the older kids were tryin' to sell us- That Daddy & Mommy Did Something in bed, at night, a baby grew inside Mommy, & popped out...Now, THAT'S some unbelievable BS right there, that is ! Everybody KNOWS you can't trust a 7th or 8th grader...Truth ain't in 'em ! (grin)

Ha!, Back when I was young, I was convinced that the sorting room behind the curtains at the local post office was where Santa made all his stuff, it didn't help that the post office employees were the ones that suggested it (why would they lie?, they work here!:D)

My son had a dream one night where he met 'God' who was this kid who had created our universe on his computer. In the dream he asked the kid/God if he could see his future on the computer. The kid showed him 'how to', he pressed a couple keys and voila he was watching himself ten or twenty years in the future laying back on a couch watching TV with his rather large wife :D

Will be real weird if his dream comes true. :yes:

recent sci-fi story started from that basis, and postulated that doing quantum experiments where we WATCHED the results resulted in hogging processing resources, and with the startup of the LHC with the density of collisions, that the universe's operating system was going to overload and crash into the blue screen of death right about no
 
Been watching Through the Wormhole hey? I saw that episode too and i did find it intriguing. Kinda like getting lost on the holodeck in Star Trek. I suppose it is possible that our universe is someone's CG pastime. After all, with billions of years and unlimited resources, why not? But of the 4 differing postulations about how the universe came to be, i liked option #1 best. But i can be a bit of an anarchist, and would love to find out that VSL or VG are real and there is no dark matter/energy out there. Back to the drawing board for physicists.
