Arrrrggggggghhhhhh--audio rack just tried to kill me & my system

The bello rack is at least as stout as the one you have. You run out of dusting cloths?
Are you sure? Mine can hold 100 Lb's at the top and each shelf can hold 65 Lbs. The whole rack itself without anything on it weighs 90 Lbs. Speaking of dust cloths, the lens on my camera was dusty too. :D

Man, that's a bummer of the highest order. Bad enough that your fine gear got damaged, but to know you sunk that kind of money into something you'll never be able to trust is whole 'nother huge, nasty pill to swallow. Not sure if you intend to redesign/modify that rack or move on to something else, but if the latter is in the cards for you then I designed a rack that you might want to consider and there is a thread in the DIY section that details its construciton. The dimensions could be modified to suit your set-up, i.e. single row intstead of two, but the concept is there and the design makes it IMPOSSIBLE for the shelves to move. It's not quite finished in the pics but you get an idea of the design.

Thanks for the concern, guys. The arm's fine, if a little sore. So far my gear appears to be functional

That bites...I have a Bell'O with glass shelves that also tend to pull out when an item is moved. The shelf brackets have screws but they somehow loosen or just dont grip the glass well. I havent had them fully fall yet but it will get me someday...

Chances are your clips are slowly deforming, or the plastic screws are. If these clips had been made out of steel instead of zinc, or just a heaver material, it would have saved this from happening.

Oh no! That would literally make my heart sink. Not taking away from any of that excellent gear but it particularily pains me to see that McIntosh out of sorts. Most importantly, I hope your arm is OK.

I don't weep for the C712. Maybe Mac's older gear was better but I've been looking to replace it for a while. At least it's undamaged so I can still sell it.

You know what I would do?

Post this tale on every hi-fi/AV forum that I could think of and send a e-mail to the company that their product is an ill-considered piece of ****.

That's pretty high on my to-do list at the moment. If someone's toddler had walked into the room and leaned on the lower shelf instead, right now I'd be vacuuming kid-brains off the floor.

My Bell'o is rated at 50/shelf and I could probably put 200 on top if I wanted to. With the shelves in place I can't lift the thing. The structure is actually quite sturdy, but sabotaged by the shelf mounting system.

Wow that really sucks. Looking at those pics makes me cringe like seeing an accident on the freeway. Hopefully, the damage to you and your gear are just cosmetic.

You know what, John? I would contact the makers of that shelf and see if they would compensate you for defective workmanship/materials. You obviously didn't overload the thing so they should stand behind it and get you back in order with a new shelf and perhaps pay you for damages incurred due to defective w/m.

I am with Big Tuna, there should be at least an implied warranty that the thing should be able to act like a shelf, good luck.....I would be really angry.

I've seen letters- real life letters, not emals- do wonders with companies I work with. Might be worth a try to send them a bit of correspondence.

Glad you're ok!

I'm using a 30 plus year old Bush cab with little plastic nubs holding the shelves up and it leans to one side slightly where I took off the back for air. Guess I have been lucky.

REAL racks support the equipment with mounting flanges securely attached to the equipment and the flanges securely attached to the 19" center rack mounting rails... if it's not it's just a shelf, not a rack.

Was that tab broken because the weight of all the gear from the top plus the other shelves came smashing down on it?

Man that is just a shame that some of your equipment got dinged up like that. I feel for you buddy, I hope some of it can be buffed out.

1) Glad you are not seriously hurt. You only have one pair of arms, and the replacements are not so good.
2) I'm with the others on the rack. I've had just as many components stuffed in a old Radio Shack stereo console stand on flimsy plastic castors and it never EVER came apart, and it's made of cheap particle board and simple pegs in holes for shelf support. Your unit looked far better than my Radio Shack unit, and it should not have broke, PERIOD.

So, it appears the shelves just slide into the tabs from the front of the rack, correct? If Bell'O would have engineered some sort of retention mechanism to keep the shelves from sliding out from the back support after installation your accident never would have happened. That is a design flaw on their part, IMO.

I got one of the StudioTech PS-3 racks on closeout that were popular around here about a year ago. The top shelf is bolted on and the bottom two shelves are cut out around the support legs. It was hard enough just wedging those two bottom shelves in; they ain't coming out. The shelves sit on beefy welded steel frames which are bolted to the support legs. That's the kind of engineering I look for in a rack, and what I expect for a $300 MSRP.
