ART DJ Pre II 2 - Phono Preamp power cord?

Hey guys just bought one of these for a solid deal on ebay with no power cord. Not super familiar with this but will any 9v power supply cord work with this? If not can anyone send any recommendations? Thanks!

I see this online for the ART DJ Pre: "Power Requirements: 7-12V DC or 9-12V AC @150mA"

Pretty wide range for voltages! Just get at least 150mA, more amperage will only improve the sound.

Here's a photo of the one that came with mine. Worth noting that the output is 9V AC. Most wallwarts are DC output. Also, note the 1000mA rating.

Not much of a surprise - according to the schematic, the internal regulator should be a standard LM340T-5. If one would use a DC power supply, I'd suggest to not to go as low as 7 V, though. Because the regulator data sheets suggest, that the input voltage should at least be 2, better 2.5 V higher than the output voltage for proper regulation, and ca. 1,4 V could be expected to drop at the rectifier diodes, it would seem recommendable no to go below 9 V(DC).

if using dc youd have to know the polarity of the plug otherwise you risk blowing it up .

No risk there. As one can feed AC or DC, one doesn't even need a schematic to conclude, that there has to be a rectifier and DC input polarity can't matter.

(...) would this one be okay? (...)

Might work ok, but I'd nevertheless not deem it a really smart choice. Several resons: For one thing, it's quite a bit more powerful than necessary for your application, which in case of switched-mode power supplies typically means suboptimal efficiency. And then it's a model with merely a single output voltage and also just a single output plug, and one with centre-negative assignment at that, so that it would be of limited usefulness for powering other devices.

Unfortunately I'm not really familiar with the power supply market over in the US, as I'd like to suggest you the US equivalent of a decent, suitable Minwa-made model like the Goobay 53995 - but this one would seem to be pretty similar: https://www.amazon.com/POWSEED-Replacement-Universal-Household-Elecronics/dp/B08LPZ8N27/

Was lend an 'Art DJ Pre II' that I could buy after test if found worthwhile. It is aiming to go with a fully DIY revised entry level turntable to go as a 'plug'N'play' gift to a friend. Find this 'Art DJ Pre II' just 'flat' and 'juice less' plugged in the JVC 'QL-5A' turntable to go fitted with anew AT91 stylus (3.5mV output).

The ex-user of the 'Art DJ Pre II' then told me to try it with a 12 Volt PSU maybe. Home dug out a spare 12.5 VDC I had laying around. Plug it in and it was indeed "smoother". Likely 'quieter' I believe. Then he told me that he remembered that it worked better with a cartridge who's output is above 4mV.

Had top pull out a last spare turntable I had awaiting different fixing issues; a small (almost 'toy' looking) Philips GA-427 turntable with it's OEM GP-400 MKI cartridge that has a nominal output of 6mV ! This combo prooved to be a much better match for the 'Art DJ Pre II' with the higher output cartridge FWIW...

hallo karma people!!! i'm kind of new to vinyl. i have a technics 1510 mk1, revised and restored. with AT95EN cartridge/stylus, and the DJ ART pre 2, new from amazon.

I read everywhere upgrading the PSU is really worth it. As they say in any audio source, power higine is a great place to improve audio quality.

i prefered to continue this thread instead of opening a new one. I was wondering what two options of psu would be good to improve the DJ Art Pre 2. With links from amazon or aliexpress to purchase it. A kind of cheaper wallwart linear if possible, and then a better one of under 75€ with a Telema or similar round transformer... I have one of those for a DAC and very happy with it.

Thanks a lot!!

2A should be better than the original one!

The unit has a fairly wide range of input voltage, but many wall warts are non-regulated and depend on the load to hit the rated output voltage.

E.g. a 9V, 1000mA supply should be 9V with 1000mA load. With no load or much less load the voltage will be higher. Likewise, using a higher rated unit gives similar results. The voltage likely will be higher than expected.

Whether or not it is of issue in any given case I can't say. But, it is something for consideration when using a different wall wart.

if we collect a few links, to purchase any decent psu's, or several, would be great. it is a 55€ preamp though, i think another 55€ top, makes sense. what about a rechargeable 9v battery??? Ni-MH? do they still sell thouse. will it really sound better??

thank you so much again, no hurries.

Lolito: Uhm, does that make sense? I mean, is that a curiosity-driven experiment, how much a cheap phono stage could profit from a better power supply? Because if not, I'd deem that upgrade somewhat questionable, as with the additional investment you'd quickly reach a budget, for which you could get/have gotten a better phono stage to begin with - 'cause the DJPreII will still be limited by its rather low internal operating voltage (namely 5 V asymmetrical (i.e. not +/- 5 V, but rather +5 V/0 V), provided by the aforementioned LM340T-5).

i see. i really dont know, that is why i ask here. so all that peole who say upgrading such psu makes an audible difference are not right or biased or... ? i dont care much about the technical details, just wanted to buy something affordable to make such improvement, but if you say it is not possible, i believe you and i save my money. thanks!!

Lolito: Mind you, I'm not claiming, that such an experiment couldn't be interesting - or that those, who have heard an improvement in combination with a better power supply, would be wrong. I just don't think, that a DJPreII plus power supply upgrade would yield the best performance for the price.
