My biggest influences young were the British Invasion guys, which gave me a love of the "simple" rock band. It's led me to like some of the stuff that comes across the radio nowdays, like weezer, etc.

My biggest single influence outside of the Beatles/Kinks/Stones/Animals/etc/etc was probably Black Sabbath. Now that I'm a Christian I don't listen to BS anymore, but 'cause of them I enjoy both very hard rock (but not partic heavy metal) and the blues (also given by Hendrix and Led Zep). I love a hard complex bass line.

At least appreciation of country from the Eagles? Charlie Daniels?

And funk, George Clinton, Curtis Blow, Rick James, etc. Did like it once, still like it occasionally. Even some of the "good" rap - no b!tch-slappin' cop killing stuff.

Classical, I don't remember the single artists but good old Mom conducting in front of the stereo is one of my earliest memories, she was also heavy into choral works, which might be my most loved music as of today. I grew up in a Lutheran church with a pipe organ, and enjoy the old hymns, as well. Dad still likes military tattoos (the plane! the plane!), as do I, if they have bagpipes.

Hearing the self titled Johnny Winter album got me into blues.
Seeing Bill Kirchen live about 50 times got me into roots country.
The Chameleons and Echo and The Bunnymen got me into modern psychedelia.
I loved mid 60's garage from early on just because it was cool.

I wouldn't say any particular artist/s inspired my taste in music, some artists led me to other artists;
David Sylvian > Jon Hassell, Kenny Wheeler, Robert Fripp
Pink Floyd > Roy Harper
Joni Mitchell > Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius etc.
but between my dad and John Peel (legendary BBC Radio1 DJ), these are the two individuals who shaped my musical tastes into what they predominantly are today.

Dad:
Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, BTO, Santana to name just a few

John Peel:
The Fall, Young Gods, Bob Marley, Butthole Surfers, Cabaret Voltaire, Cocteau Twins, CUD, Echo and the Bunnymen, Everything but the girl, Half Man Half Biscuit, House of Love, Joy Division, Loop, Morrissey, My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Orb, Pixies, Primal Scream, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sonic Youth, The Cure, The Smiths, The Specials, The undertones, Wedding Present

Couple of surprise entries, they really weren't part of the northeast music scene (even though one was from Fall River).
I was in San Fransisco around 2000, and I heard this guy on the radio and it was amazing. It was Chris Isaak doing Dancing, off Baja Sessions.
The other one was Dick Dale (aka King of the Surf Guitar). He totally upends the whole way you believe a guitar should be played.
As an example, here's him doing Pipeline with SRV. The video, and the movie kind of sucked, but this is master class in merging guitar styles.

I have to say that music lovers on this thread have profoundly diverse yet devastatingly great taste. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to visit some of the artists listed that I haven't yet heard. I'll bet I find some real jewels in there, like Dick Dale, whose music I've heard but did not know who played it. Thank you, everyone! Wow!

I like a wide variety of music, I've never understood how anyone could constrain themselves to one genre of music but I know several people who do and think everything else is crap.

They sure do miss out on a lot of good stuff.

i had 3 sisters and i was the youngest child so i had poor influence there

parents listened to country. bad influence again.

it wasn't until i started hanging out with the older guys down the block that i started building my own taste for music and then , it was Kiss. Kiss. Kiss.

the real turning point was when i started listening to Ozzy and then Dio.

I like rock, blues, classical (I like symphony, but chamber music is easier to keep track of everything).
I've got stuff from Bo Didley thru to David Gray, with side trips to Brian Ferry, the Jazz age.
I never got into death metal, but I do have an album from Lucifer's Friend before they became a driving force in the genre.
