Hello all and thanks in advance for your experience.
I bought a used pair of DQ-8s that are turning into quite the repair & upgrade saga.
I’m powering them bi-amped with a Yamaha RX V1600. Most recently while comparing some test tone and sweeps, I’ve noticed significant distortion in the left woofer.
The price of each woofer replacement from Dahlquist is over $160 plus shipping from Denmark (I know this is just peanuts to an average audiophile) and that seems quite high to me.
I am feeling uncertain whether I should:
- buy the factory replacements from dahlquist (plural -I can’t see a reason to not replace both at the same time)
-get the woofers rebuilt locally (this could take forever during the great plague of 2020 and cost as much as replacement)
-take a moment and get some guidance to upgrade them with something reasonable cost/domestic shipping like a Morel, SEAS, Tang-Band(?) can any of you suggest raw frame drivers that would bring new life back to these old mid-range boxes?
If I get a different brand replacement will this make my crossover “wrong”? (I already had to replace the Vifa tweeters with suggested contemporary Peerless tweeters).
-junior stereophile learning as I go...
