Hi all,
I'm a techie (not afraid to cut and solder) but a total noob when it comes to turntables and their subtleties. Recently me and my friends have gotten back into playing old (and new) vinyl at our shared space. I've been struggling to keep our aged tables from dying. I'm currently using an AT Pro-Linear 1600 (likely a Chuo Denki). Prior to this I had a Dual 1019 running but the platter started to lag and slow while playing sometimes so I pulled it, either the belt or the wheel I imagine. Need to look at that yet. Anyway, the sound quality of the Dual seemed clearer than the AT Pro-linear which gave me the idea that maybe I should change the stylus. I've taken a photo to show you what was in the AT 1600. It's a Shure "PS" or SPS and the needle is in a green housing.
My questions are: can I just replace the needle? With what? How do I tell what part number I need? If I can't find a part what's the best route? Do I replace the whole cartridge and stylus with something else? Do I go OEM or Generic? I don't need to gold plate this job I just want something with decent sound and good value.
Thanks.
