AT10 worth a new stylus?

I'm about to pick up a vintage TT to refurbish and from the pictures I THINK it's got an AT10 cartridge on it. I already own an AT100E cartridge. So, if I sunk under $40 on a replacement stylus for the AT10 like the ATS11E or ATS12 would it be a whole lot different than my AT100E? Or would it be similar and I should just keep saving for the DL110 or DL301MK2 I've been eyeing to go along with the MC capabilities of my pre?

The ATN12XE would be the stylus to get for it. Won't compete with the DL110 though.

OK, so that's $50 which is still doable. The question is, if it will be much different than the AT100E sound-wise. I know that's a somewhat arbitrary question. I just don't want to spend what would be part of a budget for a MC cart on something that sounds very similar to what I already have.

carts from different eras. >>~~> My preference<~~<< is with the older line. The 12XE, and 12SA were very nice carts. The 12XE will extract a bit more detail than the 100, but, then that goes back to what one calls detail. I find detail of the tone of the note more important (to me) than the attack of the note. Still neither are in the league of the D110.

My daily driver is an AT12Sa with a Shibata and I enjoy it quite a bit. I've not heard a 110 on my table but the 12Sa is not in the same league as a 103R.

The biggest problem is finding an OEM stylus that's worthwhile for less than your stated $40. If your 100E is in good shape I'd just use that instead.

Cheers,
Larry B.

Looks like stereoneedles has the 12xe for $50 and the ATS12S or ATN12S for $53

Oops. Don't know how that got put in your quote

I would suggest getting the ATS12C stylus from stereoneedles.com. It is a brown color and will fit that cartridge.
It will beat any new cartridge for the price. It sounds great on both my PL 516 and my GT 750.

The Shibata styli from AT are still available, Jico also makes a replacement. howerer either of those will put you half way or more to the purchase of a 110.

I just picked up the turnatable and it's actually an AT11 body with a 10 stylus on it. Anyone know if there's a difference in the AT10 and AT11 bodies?
Also, same question remains - Is the 12XE stylus on this babay worth it or will it be too similar to my AT100E.... Life is hard sometimes.

the only body in that series that was different was the 12SA body, lower output, lower inductance. Is the stylus you refer to a genuine AT stylus, or EVG, or Jico, or Phan, or etc?

Sorry, I am considering getting a genuine AT12XE to put on it. It came with a genuine AT10s, but I don't know the condition and it doesn't really seem worth the risk for a conical stylus.

I believe you may find the sound from the ATN12XE to be a bit warmer then the AT100E, which I feel is a bit on the bright side. I picked one up off the bay for less than you quoted so look there. I run the 12XE on a Pioneer PL 12D. It is a nice combo.

That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks Revox. The 100E sounds a bit bright to me too, but less so than the AT95E did when I compared the 2.
Did you find a genuine AT12XE on Ebay? All I've seen are generics.

Yes, it was genuine. < 40.00 inc. shipping. I would make sure to only use original AT as they are still available and really not expensive at the moment. You will also know that you are getting the original sound too. That piece of mind to me is worth something.

Can't say I was all that impressed with the "universal" line contact I picked up here ...

PS ... can't say as I even remember what cartridge that is. Just a backup, and it's been a while, and I ain't lookin' to remove it to peek ... ;-}
