AT15S skips on Pioneer/Sansui SR-222 arm?

Good Morning,

I was playing Robert Cray on the Pioneer PL-10/Sansui SR-222 arm TT and using the AT15S cartridge it skips? I double check all the setup. I replaced the cartridge with a Shure M97Xe and it plays fine?

This is a LP-Gear Shibata Stylus brand new? I did notice the weight of the Shure and the AT are very different. AT heavy, Shure Lighter. I am tracking at 1.5 grams.

Any Help?

That is strange, is it a New Old Stock stylus? Maybe you got a bad stylus. Cause those cartridges are much sought after. I tried for over two years to win one from fleabay with no luck. Could be it's to compliant for that arm. It's a puzzler.

Most of my other lp's play OK. But, it should not skip, there are no scratches on the lp. Plays fine on other TT's with Grado Black and Shure carts.
I changed the VTA by adding a thicker platter mat, still skips in the same area.

I assume you are rebalancing and setting the correct tracking force for each cartridge. I think you might look at whether the cuing platform is fouling the arm -- sometimes they have a slight angle or bend in them and at some point across the record, they contact the arm and block its motion. Worth checking.
 
If it works fine with everything else, it has to be the stylus. Remember that even on a NOS original stylus the suspension can stiffen up over years, which would explain its skipping. An overly stiff suspension will skip at too low a tracking force.

It's deffinately the stylus, I put the old one back on and NO skip!
I paid Big money for this too!

Have to contact LP Gear.

UPDATE: I sent them the information with the problem. Now I have to Wait.

2 questions:
1. Does it still skip when you reduce the antiskate setting?
2. Is the turntable level?
 
Rebalance the tonearm with each cartridge. That is your problem. The clue is that both cartridges weigh different and will not play the same. Unless you balance the tonearm with each cartridge change, you will have this problem.

Did that, I put the old stylus back on and it worked fine, new stylus is the problem.

I rebalanced the tonearm for each cartridge tested.

This reminds me of when I bought a genuine NOS Ortofon for my F15E It skipped a lot when I first got it. I did everything I could think of to get it to not skip. Well when I tried to pull the stylus out of the body it was like it was glued in. So I posted about here, and a couple of places with many ideas as to how to get the stylus out. I got desperate and squirted a tiny amount of WD40 in the area that the stylus goes into the body. I let it sit over night and poof in the morning it came out. So just for giggles I thought let me try it again now that it's lubed because some of the lube got into where the stylus makes contact with the cantilever. Guess what I still have the stylus and it tracks like a champ. Maybe your just needs a break in period or a little lubing to loosen the suspension.

I am going to let it break in some more, I put a drop of WD-40 on the stylus base, I am playing the LP now, getting better.

Shhhhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone it will be our little secret. I'm glad it's working out, believe me I know the frustration of a skipping stylus. Really pisses you off.
 
I do not think the Cart TT combo work well with each other.

I will use it on another TT. Cart too heavy! The counter weight is almost at the end of it's balance travel.

Any Ideas of what Tables work with heavy carts?

Shure M97xE works great!

I changed the cartridge on the Frankenstein TT, The Shure works and sounds Great! NO skipping..

I set it up 1.75 grams.
