AT440MLa: buy new stylus or replace with a new cartridge?

Okay. I don't know what happened to mine. I've read that others have had the same problem with this particular cartridge. Poor quality control?

Did you do a check with a volt/ohm meter? I don't know what the exact numbers should be for a Shure, but you should get something from maybe 400 to 800 ohms resistance in each channel. If one of the channels has no resistance, then the coil wire is broken internally.

Yes, that is true. There is also a lot of fear and worry that analog VOM's can fry the wiring inside a cartridge when checking for resistance figures. But I didn't even hear about this until well after I started in this hobby with my old trusty analog VOM. I certainly haven't fried any cartridges.

I didn't suggest that the cartridge was fried by a VOM. The destroyed cartridge I heard about was from a static discharge as the user was about to lift his tonearm. Zap, and that it all she wrote. I see very little danger from checking a cartridge with a quality VOM. I do it all the time when I build Longhorns, or check any other cart for resistive balances between channels......

So, it was the soda then.........
