AU-217 speakers

I'm looking at a pair of Elac Uni-fi UB5 bookshelf speakers to use with my AU-217, but a lot of people say they need to be driven by an amp that has excellent dynamic power output in the 4 ohm range. Would that fit the 217?

AU-217 II is not rated for 4 Ohms, AU-217 is. It will run Elac speakers fine at reasonable levels, but it is not a powerful amp and main limitation is power output, not 4 Ohm capability.

At only 30w (into 8 ohms), I'd be looking for some fairly efficient speakers. Probably anything above 90db would work.

Klipsch are very efficient, but not to everyone's liking. Personally, I don't care for them. Others love them.

In the vintage realm, you can't go wrong with any of the ADS lineup. Most are around 92/93 db and sound great. The first page of this thread lists the different models. The bigger the number, the bigger the speaker. https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/a-d-s-line-pecking-order.44406/

I've owned the L620's and L710's. All of the models produce a very smooth, but still very detailed sound.

I have the manual for the Sansui au 217 and it clearly says to load 8 ohm speakers Both editions are rated for 8 ohms.Messenger_creation_5C78A783-3E8C-40A5-B707-B37E4A34FE81.jpegMessenger_creation_5CA4635B-6582-4B52-A20E-55720F927259.jpeg

Being rated for 8 Ohms does not mean 8 Ohm is minimum impedance. If it was, there would be a warning on the back panel next to the speaker connectors, like it is on the next generation AU-217 II where there is a printed warning "8 Ohms or more". AU-217 does not have such warning.

In version II, they wrote to be clear, people should not connect speakers below 8 ohm nominal. For many you have to specify explicitly and the manual can get lost. Speakers rated 8ohm can drop below 6ohm, maybe even less. Anyway, everyone can do what they want with their device.

Agree with @rickb119 that Klipsch and ADS both would make a great pairing due to their efficiency (sensitivity). Very different SQ between them. I've owned many of both and like them equally but for different reasons. Klipsch for "in the room" vocals and strings and ADS for silky everything.

The ADS L400 or L400e are incredible little two way speakers - "giant killers" - excellent low end extension

The L570 and L570/2 are larger "book shelf" speakers that do what the littler ones do and more

Both of these are a very good value for ADS.

Here's what even the mighty little AU-117 can do with the sufficiently sensitive speakers -

L570/2 via AU-317

If you have the room and the budget, these new DWX big bookshelf speakers are best of all worlds.

Here are the floor stander DW6 version with an AU-417

Those should be a great start!

Some info from the owners manual:

Frequency range: 45 hz to 20khz
Sensitivity: 92 db
Power handling: 25 watts continuous; 100 peak
6.5" shielded woofer/ .75" ferro-fluid cooled tweeter, mounted coax with acoustic lens

Yup, that's why I jumped on them based on the specs.

ADS speakers are usually rated 4 to 6 ohms, they do sound great though. I just don’t crank them up. Have a set of L700 that are 4 ohms, I try to mainly use them with my AUG77x which has an impedance switch on the back.

Any recommendations for some nice sounding bookshelves?

there are quite a few. From Infinity IL-10s to Sonus Faber Minuetto. You are not going to get rock concert levels from 30 watts but plenty of speakers can be driven with 30 watts. Look for something that are 88db eff or higher.

The sonus faber minuetto looks nice but costs to much. I use speakers Canton karat 200 version 8 ohm together with Sansui au-117II. I doubt sonus faber minuetto sounds better than canton karat 200653cd19c-1b7e-40fc-b0b3-98400fb6be6e.jpeg.
For the au-217 the Canton karat 300 would be excellent.
