AU 317 Channel imparity

The left channel of my AU-317 sounds less clear or less loud. Than the right. It's not the speaker because it does it with both sets of speakers and when I switch my A speakers to another amp the channels are level. It is especially noticeable in the highs and the mids, so the centre sound of the stereo image shifts to the right. I can get it in the middle by turning the balance to the left. It varies a bit how far I have to turn it it seems. The balance pot doesn't crackle but it does feel a bit grungy on the left side. The Tone defeat, next to it does crackle a bit when I turn it on, but when I leave the switch alone it's silent. I've hooked my phone up directly to the power amp, hoping it would not suddenly push the volume to full. The disparity went (if anything the left was now a bit brighter (nowhere near the difference I heard earlier) but the image was in the centre). Edit: Volume pot feels stable at does not crackle either.

Can I diagnose this as a problem in the pre-amp? The grindy balance or the crackling tone defeat?

Okay after testing some more I determined it is the bass response from the right channel that is lacking. It is noticeably (visibly and when I feel the cones with my finger tips) less. Could this just be dirty contacts in the pre-amp section? It does this with both speakers a and b. When I switch to another amp (amp switch box) bass response from both speakers l/r is the same. The right channel does crackle a bit when I switch on tone defeat (or did since I moved it about so much it is gone for now). I've heard some crackle when moving loudness as well. So a switch it around a bit. Right channel bass response is on and off with loudness off. A bit unstable. Seems to be equal in loudness on mode.

Try to clean all the switches: Tone, Loundness and Tape Monitor as well. It's something to be done one day.

Thanks. I don't think I am up to that though. I was hoping some deoxit would be enough. At least until I send it out for a full recap and overhaul at some point.
