AU-317 mkII troubleshooting - help appreciated

If anyone has time to share some thoughts, it would be much appreciated.

The 317 mkII stopped working. Cutting to the chase, I opened it up and did some checks. The following thread was most helpful.

But my checks showed that more components appear to have failed on my amp, so it would be great if someone with the sort of knowledge shared on that thread would let me know how much further I need to go before replacing components.

Before the amp blew, I had inadvertently connected it to 4 Ohm speakers (back panel warns against anything less than 8 Ohm). I assumed that this would have been the cause and that, with luck, the damage might be confined to the output transistors. However, there appears to be a number of related components that have failed.

The immediate sign of failure was blown fuses (the ones supplying the output stage). I checked the output transistors to find that TR17 and TR19 are conductive C-E. The thread above contained the following advice:

I would check the following before refitting the outputs -

TR13, TR14, TR15, TR16 ( these are the driver transistors for the outputs). Check them in circuit using the same testing principles as with the outputs, they should measure the same for both channels (TR13/TR15 in one channel, TR14 and TR16 the other channel).

R47, R48, R53, R54 shoud be 82 ohm

R49, R50, R51, R52, should be 220 ohm

R33, R34, R43, R44, should be 680 ohm

R55, R56, R61, R62, should be 6.8 ohm

The above are "fuse" resistors and are known to drift high in value over time.

Also check R37, R38, R59 and R60< should measure almost short circuit as they are 0.33 ohm.

And while you are at it, also measure R17 an R18 on the Control Amp F2752 board, these are also fuse resistors (not marked as such in the schematic) These can be measured from the solder side of the board (refer to the board layouts in the service manual).​

I did the checks described (components in place).

I found that TR13 and TR15 were conductive C-E (~150 and 3 Ohms, respectively), whereas their counterparts on the other channel measured as an open circuit.

The related resistors R49 and R51 were about 130 Ohms and 3.5 Ohm, respectively, whereas their counterparts on the other channel measured at the correct 220 Ohms.

The other resistors all measured within ~5% of correct value (noting that the 0.33 Ohm resistors are hard to accurately measure) save for R17, which was 75.8 Ohms - about 10% over the correct value of 68 Ohms.

At this stage I would prefer to replace what I need to. These are
  1. Output transistors TR17 and TR 19
  2. Driver transistors TR13 and TR15
  3. Resistors R49 and R51
I was planning on leaving R17 alone for the time being.

The questions I would like to ask are:
  1. Does this pattern of failure suggest that more checking is needed?
  2. Should I replace the counterparts on the channel that have not failed?
  3. TR13 and TR15 are shown in the manual as 2SD357 and 2SB527, respectively. Any recommendations for replacements (or should I just look on line)?
  4. I have already obtained On Semi output transistors. I ordered MJ21193 and MJ21194 (as recommended in another AK thread) but received MJ21193G and MJ21194G parts. Is this an issue?

The questions I would like to ask are:

I would check all the power supply voltages, and build a DBT - in view of the fact that you have had blown OP transistors.

Not usually necessary - except that it is usual to replace ALL the output transistors when one or more fail. (save the old good ones)

Look in one of the 'transistor equivalent' threads of which there are at least 2 - (one in the exclusively Sansui forum by ToniCH). Or just to a search of AK for each type number and see what others have used.

The 'G' at the end just indicates they are the 'lead free' version - thus not an issue.

I have a DBT but the amp is not happy to have fuses replaced even when in series with a 30W bulb (relay trips). That said, voltage measured across fuse terminals (without the fuses) looked about right. I'm not sure there is too much else I can do to check power supplies until I at least remove the bad components. Will check later.

The thread by ToniCH on transistor substitutions is helpful. I have also found useful suggestions from EchoWars (Toshiba 2SA1837 and 2SC4793). Mouser seems to be a popular site for getting parts. But postage from the US to Australia is generally surprisingly high - in this case, $35 for a parcel that should be no bigger than a letter with parts worth a few dollars. If I knew exactly what I needed and got it all in one go it wouldn't be a big deal. But this is the second lot of components and there may be more I need to get. There should be a reasonable margin between cost of parts and replacement amp.

The Toshiba (and also recommended On Semi substitutes) are available on eBay. I didn't find any from US sellers (I have found more reasonable postage from the US by shopping on eBay Canada - go figure). The available options on eBay are from sellers in Hong Kong, China and other SE Asian places - all with very reasonable postage and generally comparable unit prices to Mouser.

The obvious question is whether there is too great a risk of counterfeit products in buying from Asia on eBay. This came up in the thread I noted in my original post - but is was in the context of Sanken T03-style transistors which are no longer made and have a higher unit value. Is this also likely to be a risk with the smaller T0-220 style units, particularly where I am looking for parts that are in current production?

I'm sure there is no definitive answer, but it would help to know whether counterfeit transistors are found across the board or whether they tend to crop up in cases where they might be competing with more valuable NOS items, like Sanken T03s. I'd obviously choose a seller based on substantial trade in electronic components and good track record rather than lowest price.

I think there is still a significant risk of getting counterfeit or substandard semiconductors, if not bought from well known suppliers.

I have to pay the equivalent of $25.5 AU (£12) to get parts from Mouser (to the UK) it limits the number of orders I place with them, but it would take a lot to make me buy from any auction site or 'unknown' Internet supplier. Note that if I order more than £50 worth of parts shipping is free!

John (skippy) - good suggestion. Transistors have been ordered.

John (Hyperion) - I stumbled across Mouser UK after my last post and was surprised to see 12 quid postage within the UK. I have bought turntable parts from the UK on eBay and it has cost me 2 or 3 quid to get them sent all the way here. Similar parcel size (if not bigger).

As you have probably guessed, I'm at the steeper end of the learning curve. I'll know better next time that I need to work out more before I start ordering parts.

Well actually, I order the parts from Mouser UK website and pay in GBP - but the parts still have to come from the US - hence the shipping fee.
