AU-555 vs AU-555A

I have both and favour the 555 but would be interested in other's opinions.

The AU-555 has been my main amp. Recently I found a nice AU-555A and have been using it on the work bench for testing other audio finds. Currently I'm having a rearrangement and have an opportunity to put the "A" in the main system.

I know the "A" is regarded a better amp as it has a little more power and one or two extra features but what is keeping me to the 555 is the phono sections. The 555 has 47k ohm loading on phono 1 and 100k ohm loading on phono 2. The 555A on the other hand has both phono 1 and 2 at 50k ohms. To me the 555 gives me a little more flexibility because of this. I definately don't need the extra power or features of the "A" so I really can't see the point.

What do you guys think?

I would enjoy the extra flexibility of both and rotate them into your system every so often.

Indeed I will. Both here to stay.

What's the story with the 222, 777, 888, 999? Do they have a different phono sections?

These are very simple amps to recap. A good beginner project. The bigger issue is the flying saucer transistors. They are a little more difficult and expensive to replace.

Would be interesting to know sound-vice how did you find sounding of 555 vs 555A. As models are very close to each other in terms of circuitry. Any difference in sound and which one is preferred if to leave apart any differences in inputs and power - just to take into account sounding?

Please check the dates - you're 14 years too late to the party ;)
