AU-717 Recap

MIJ_Pioneer

Super Member
I fell in love with the look of the AU-717 and was surprised by its lower cost and availability. Dual mono integrated amp is new to me, I have mainly used receivers only. The look of the 717 with the top off I thought would really be a nice piece to show some of the workmanship. I had been looking for one for a few weeks and finally found one in the area. A nice guy had it for sale, he said it was his good friend's who had bought it new and barely used it. From the looks of it I would agree. It's mint!

The 717 for me has been the hardest piece of equipment to service (I've recapped sx-1280, 1250, 650s, 7070). It just took a long time, piece by piece. This one has every single transistor replaced other than the outputs. Lots of room for error (and there was some). The power board was difficult, hard to get out, hard to troubleshoot, packed tight, lots of glue, and has those pins that Sansui used to run through the solder pads. I spent about 14 hours on the power board alone! The whole time I couldn't imagine being a tech doing this for money and/or offering this full recap/diodes/transistors/lube/clean etc service. The cost of the unit itself would way outweigh the time/cost that would go into. I will say - when I first got it I knew it had potential but it was tired. Sounded lifeless, bass was boomy/muddy. Almost on or off. Now that it is serviced it sounds completely different. I noticed the biggest change when the powerboard was done.

Overall it is a fantastic piece, one the best I have ever heard. I am very impressed what kind of power it puts out for just two output transistors per side. I A/B'ed it with a recapped 1280 and I don't know how Sansui does it but the bass is just out of this world. The 1280 (and 1250) have a phenomenon where they get real loud but from what I have noticed is bass really taxes them (at near max volume). If you're cranking and a big bass note shows up the big Pioneer might clip into protection. The 717 really was giving bass that the 1280 wouldnt do. One of the listeners said a few times "the 1280 would be dropping right now". Obviously didn't get as loud but it certainly held its own.

Thank you to LeeStereo and Super Noob for their work on the 717 and documentation. 99.9% of this BOM is Super Noob's which he created for LeeStereo's guide.

calling on hyperion! Anyone have a substitute? this one is out on mouser and digikey.
thanks

re: TR604 – 2SA733 / Now KSA733CY (in the power supply section; I have not found that on via Mouser .... but.....
I have found KSA733CYTA at Digi-Key .... is that the same?

also, C19-C22 – Original .47uf 50v (LL) / Now .47uf 100v (WIMA MKS2D034701E00KSSD) - (again in the power supply section) Mouser does not
have stock of these.... so while I need to make a Digi-Key order, does 1928-1509-ND look to be the same as the above capacitor?

Much thanks for any input regarding these as I would like to have something to do while we're on lock-down.

Hi,

Yes, KSA733CYTA is correct. Please note that the C suffix means center pin = Collector

upload_2020-12-11_17-32-39.png

1928-1509-ND - This is a good replacement, it is 100v DC rated and from Wima's MKP series (Polypropylene). Size is nearly identical and has the same lead spacing (5mm)

How far are you going with this restore? The 717 I did from this thread is still my favorite. It is dead silent, you can put the volume at max and hear not a single flea fart of hiss :)

Thank you so much for the information!!
I am going to begin with the power supply board so that I can get that back into shape.
The amplifier sections are currently working as well as the left channel of the preamp. - Right side of the preamp is dead due to no voltage to that board atm.
If the power supply goes well, then I'd like to proceed with rest of the unit. :)

The TA in CYTA means they come on tape... CYBU would be BUlk

Digi-Key's KSA733CYTA shows that its' a "market place" item... "may incur extra shipping charges"... argh.... plus, apparently, I have to purchase 6250 (minimum order)
According to this list, I need 1? - any idea as where to get these without purchasing a huge quanity?

They're made in china so there is the import duty. The Fairchild/ON ones have gone obsolete and are NLA. except for those who bought them up and still have remaining stock. Digi-Key and Mouser are both out...

.....would these be a replacement KSA733GTA TRANSISTOR PNP 50V 150MA TO-92 KSA733 KSA733G 733G KSA733GT 733G for the now obsolete KSA733CYTA ?
...and this Murata 81-RDE5C2A220J0M1H3A on Mouser comes up as 20% correct on Mouser is it the right one to use...thanks!
