AU-717 Repair/Refurb

Hello, everyone. I'm new to this forum.

I'm the original owner of a Sansui AU-717 and TU-717. I also have an AX-7 that I bought secondhand years ago. When my wife and I renovated our den, my equipment ended up in the garage. After a few years, the "bug" has bitten once again and I've set up my equipment. Unfortunately, the volume pot on my amp is noisy and the right channel is very distorted. I suppose I neglected it too long. Not to mention, it's over 30 years old.

Does anyone know a good tech on Long Island to repair and refurbish my AU-717? I am willing to ship and have found a repair service in Ohio that advertises on eBay, but I am reluctant to ship it to him since I don't know the quality of his work.

I'd appreciate any leads you can provide me with so that my beloved AU-717 is repaired properly. I respect your opinions.

Thank you,
Kevin

First: by a can of deoxit D100 and F100 and clean and lub all the pots and switches. You shall be amazed!!! If that does not work, ask again.:D

It probably just needs to be cleaned. If you want help, AK member jblmar is in Brooklyn and there is a good shop in Hartford if you feel like a ferry ride across LI sound.

I ordered the Deoxit and will follow the directions as stated in the sticky. In the meantime, I found a thread in audioasylum.com describing the same problem and it turned out to be the switch that couples the preamp and the amp. Being impatient, I opened the case and used a can of electronics cleaner I had laying around and cleaned that switch, among others. I couldn't believe it -- my AU-717 lives!

What makes this even more rewarding for me is that my daughter, who is now 16 years old, is playing her ipod through my system. I was about her age when I bought this system in the 70's. Thankfully, although she listens to some music that I can't stand, she has also come to appreciate and listen to the rock that I listened to when I was young.

As soon as the Deoxit arrives, I'll give it another cleaning and of course use the lubricant as right now all the contacts are dry.

And thanks for the information, Pete. I may still end up needing the amp serviced, so I appreciate your reply. By the way, I live on Long Island and work in Brooklyn.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I truly appreciate it.

Kevin
