AU-999 Recondition complete......WOW.....

Hmmm contentious issue, 5.0's findings align themselves neatly with what Kev eventually decided IIRC.

So this may add more proof/credence (if any were needed) to the often quoted "amplifier architecture governs eventual sound quality"
 
John , I was commenting more along the lines of ~

Is it feasible that amplifiers sporting 40 odd year old components can be reliably compared against another, when the amplifiers concerned simply cannot be performing to specification therefore sound as they did when they left the factory .

Yep - got that...

I was along the lines of "it doesn't matter whether the caps are new or 40 years old - you could/might still be able to hear the architecture differences"
 
Congratulations on completing such a nice restoration. :thmbsp: The AU-999 is a sweet amp! It dates from the days when the Sansui founder was still alive, and Sansui was still primarily known as the experts in transformer construction --two factors that probably help explain its characteristic "Sansui sound." Sweet, rich, detailed... "tube like" is the way some put it. However you describe it, there is something very appealing about the Sansui sound. Of course, this presumes the unit in question has been fully recapped; otherwise, you're listening to aging capacitors!

I had two AU-999s, and got rid of one in a swap-with-cash deal... and still sort of regret it. I also have an AU-9500, and both have seen regular rotation at Casa Arkay. Since moving recently into a smaller place, they're sitting in storage (at least temporarily), but both will do their turn in rotation here, just at longer intervals than before. One future day when I move back to a place with more space, they'll get more frequent/regular use again!
 
Congrats on the restore, again I like the 999. I would pick one up any day of the week over most amps I know of. I also understand what the above poster was saying I am just assuming my 999 worked okay but maybe it needed to have some upgrades to get a fair chance. I actually like all the old Sansui stuff it was just awsome. I would like to hear a recapped 999 some time maybe I would change my mind.

Funny thing about all this studio talk is I was thinking my AU-999 would have made a good match for my 4411's in my studio... but was really disappointed in it's current harsh soundstage.
Any studio guys here use Yamaha NS10m studio monitors... and what do YOU use to power them? I currently use a Hafler on mine.

I own a pair of ns10m and i power them with a crown reference 1 and sometimes with the crown d60, i have a few friends that use the hafler with ns10m and they like the combo
