I'm always on the lookout for sansui gear but I haven't ever bought anything newer than 1980 and I ran across this deal today.
1 sansui AU-G99X
1 sansui TU-77X Tuner
1 sansui RG-710 Equalizer
All for $250
Can anyone tell me if this is a good price and what year this setup was made?

The AU-G99X was apparently released in 1984. It has the x-balanced circuit topology and should sound very nice indeed. 160WPC, big toroidal transformer. Same era as the B/C-2101 and B/C-2102 pre and power amp combo which sound great!

If that package was available for that price in Australia, I'd be all over it like a rash. I'm not sure how it stacks up in terms of US pricing.

Acording to the the seller every thing works great and he can demo before I make a decision..
 
IMHO you can't lose! I really, really rate the sound of the later Sansui amps. The AU-Alpha X-balanced amps form the backbone of my system these days, but the slightly earlier X-balanced gear also sounds superb. It's noticeably more revealing/accurate than the earlier Sansui stuff.
 
I had one of those back in the eighties, it sounded really good when new and was a powerhouse, but it's an old amp you have to be prepared for expensive servicing ahead.

The big Sansui amps are what I am the most nostalgic about, I always loved the SQ, I really miss one in my house. The last one I had was the AU-X901 which I sold ca 1990 when I wasn't into stereo gear anymore at that time. From my memory the earlier AU-D11 was the best sounding of the lot, regret not having kept that one even more. The best amp I have ever heard was the B-2301 which was contemporary with the AU-G99X. Scoring a C-2301/B-2301-combo is the ultimate wet dream :)

I have the eventual possibility of buying a AU-X711 for 400$ from one seller, which I will probably do, 250$ requires less headache to go through with the deal. Irritating though that some find those for like 20$ at garage sales and such (my current Sony-amp was 20$) ...

I think $250 for an AU-G99X is a bargain. Better sounding amp than the AU-717 IMO, though the 717 sells for more.

Not a fan of the tuners though. I have had a couple TU-S77X and a few TU-D99X tuners, and they just didn't float my boat.
I prefer my TU-X301i, and would love to find a TU-X711.

Nothing is set in stone yet because I've been working long nights with one more night to go but if it's still available tomorrow I'll go get it.

I just called the seller and he said he will hold them for me until tomorrow afternoon. I hope he's a man of his word.
 
I was looking over the service manual on this and noticed that I need to set the dc offset hot and cold ground so does that mean for hot probe the positive,negative terminals with my dmm andfor cold probe positive terminal and ground to chassis?

Yes, that is correct - this is a 'Ground Free' design - neither of the speaker terminals is at ground potential, and neither should ever be grounded.

(this includes 'scope probes, powered subwoofers, speaker switches and so on).

Thanks John I'm gonna go get that thing today and thought I should adjust the dc offset and bias before listening to it and then resume work on the x1.

It's one of the family of later designs that started with the AU-D11 II, IIRC, the same basic design is used in very many of the later models, the 'X' does denote that it is an 'X Balanced' model. ;)

The AU-G99X is VERY similar to the AUD11 II, except it has more power and the bargraph power meters.

Another learning experience for me are the adjustment's on this thing (very tedious)but after about an hour of trying to get everything right I zeroed the DC offset and set bias nuts on 20mv.Now I have Alvin Lee's the last show playing and it sounds pretty darn good.20160802_161302.jpg
