Audacity Recording Level Change Question/Problem

I have spent most of the afternoon and evening trying to record from Youtube. I get a fair record level of -15 and I get a reasonable recording import into Mp3 file. Though satisfied with my recording, I would love to be able to make adjustment if need. This it the thing I have been unable to do all day. When I adjust the recording level slider, all it does it pair up with the sound play level. Both sliders move but change only playback not the record level. This default record level does not clip, as I have clipping tool applied.

If any of you have some solid Audacity knowledge and would agree to assist me, It would be welcomed. I have looked for help in the Audacity website and in Wikipedia and have found no simple discussion of the matter, nothing obvious.

I don't know anything about Audacity, but have used some other programs to record YT videos and convert them to audio only files.

Have you tried it with the clipping tool turned off? It might lock the in/output sliders together.

Easier and better than about anything I've used.

Since I have enough blank CDR's to last the rest of my life, I use Nero to EQ (If needed, lots of old stuff has little bass) and burn them onto a CD to load into the hard drive in my car. I could use a USB stick but it seems like they have a habit of dying and the last one corrupted all the music I had on my car's hard drive and I had to reinstall everything, a major hassle.

They sound great, if the source is good..
 
I don't have Audacity up & running just now, but from memory:
this an easy thing to do. with the file displayed on the screen, 'select all' ; now go click on the modify (? don't remember the name) tab; choose amplify (IIRC); window pops up & displays number to max out the peak point in the file; best to set the factor -1 or -2 dB from this; click on the button to perform the operation. When complete, re-save the file.
