I can kinda understand why someone might "repair" a wire that way, if they don't have access to a soldering iron and solder, though they really should have wrapped some tape around it.

What's going on in the second picture is just plain stupidity.

Ya, that's what the sockets would look like after I plugged hair pins into them.
I was cured from doing it though. My mother would sneak up behind me and stick a pin in my butt as I was about to insert a hair pin. That pain cured me. The pop, flash of light, and shock didn't. Go figure.
