Hi Guys!
So I have probably not been a particularly active member of this site for quite a while. Although I still love vintage equipment like I did when I first joined this site as a teenager, now that im in my 30's I haven't been spending the time indulging myself with audio and related old equipment.
That was until yesterday morning when I was on the train to work.
I have a bit of a nasty Facebook habit and on this occasion I was browsing FB Market place while being tranced by the infinite scroll. I stopped and boom I saw an Old AKAI amp! Exactly like the AS-980 I have wanted for the last 10 years... with a reel to reel, and a record player!
On closer inspection the amp was an AS-970 (close enough), no details on the other equipment, but I didnt care. These things NEVER come up for sale and the price was right for me (And I had just been paid!) so by a freak of luck managed to be the first person to get in contact with them and I ended up with the prize!
I finish work and get the train home, of course my truck is broken down.... so I'm forced to turn up in my old hatchback to pick everything up. I wake up the old hatch from the garage and head down the highway to pick everything up.
A nice old couple, the guy clearly loved his equipment and it had been taken care of. Repair receipts, original manuals, all the speaker terminals for the amp. Everything there. The old man showed me the reel to reel in action and everything worked beautifully and sounded amazing. They both spoke about how they loved music and listening to the old system, and how they have used it over the years.
So after a chat and a good 30 mins of disassembly I walk away with this haul:
AKAI AS-970 Quad receiver, AKAI GX-280D-SS quad channel R2R, A 'Linear Design' turn table (seems like a good quality unit) and a quad set of some 'Linear Design' speakers.
OH.... and they threw in 60 records while I was there!
I loaded up the car and everything "Just" fit. I drove 40 the mins down the highway home in silence, listening to the little motor hum in ol-faithful. Kinda overwhelmed at how cool this experience was and how this day panned out, I started the day looking at a Facebook ad and now I was driving in my car with all this dream gear.
wow.
So far I have been blown away at the sound the amp reproduces, but I will need some time to get familiar with everything. Im also going to need better furniture to accommodate this stuff!
