In the early 70's, there was only one Receiver that topped the Heathkit AR-1500, the Marantz Model 19. And, in many respects, the AR-1500 even topped the Marantz for about $500.00 less when factory built and $800.00 less as a kit! Such a deal!

I was able to pick-up at AR-1500A from the guy that built it and it is SENSATIONAL. I'll add photos shortly.

Chris, my AR-1500 is still in use. I listen to it every day.

It seems to handle my AR-3a's with ease. Recently, I migrated to passive bi-amping and the AR-1500 amp now only drives the woofers.

The FM tuner, however, is used constantly as we have a local public radio station that plays jazz commercial free, 24 hours a day. Further, the DJ's are all volunteers and extremely knowledgable.

Without disputing that the 1500 is a very nice receiver, not sure I'd elevate it to that status.
 
Very cool artical and I guess a key if buying one of these recievers is getting the construction/check-out manual with it. While I'm not ready to trade my Marantz 19 for the AR, I will keep my eyes open.

I do recall the buzz when the AR-15 first hit the streets and was getting rave reviews, as it was the first time that a Heathkit was considered competitive with mainstream audio equipment at the time, rather then just an affordable wantabe...

Lefty -- I certainly wouldn't trade a Model 19 for a Heathkit either. But the Heathkits can be had for a small fraction of the price of the 19, offer a similar build-quality and almost similar performance, if you can get over not having the o'scope. :D
