Audio related field trips requested

good evening all, I will be heading to Las Vegas in two weeks for a conference. I generally try to check out local record shops whenever I travel for work, and I have never been to Vegas and have little desire to gamble. Anyone in the AK community have recommendations for audio related field trips I might undertake while in the city of sin?

No suggestions, but have fun man! Vegas is a blast! Good for you!

And hey, if you hit it big, you can buy a whole new system. LOL Doubt that would be the 1st thing one would buy if it happened. :)

Kind Regards,
John

Thanks John! Familiar with San Diego? I'll be going there in January if my abstract gets accepted...

I am familiar with San Diego, but not really sure where to point you in the direction of audio shops.

You head to the bay area tho I can point you to a few good spots, and know a few friends who are the largest collectors in California. All top end gear, LYNN, McIntosh, Sota TT's.. You name it they probably have it. I usually restore gear for them, (rebuild amps, or refinish speaker cabinets) and in return get to pick up new toys ;)

Try using Craigslist as well while you are in CA, you may find something that you have to have, and may need to ship it home. :)

If you get the chance to go to Oakland or SF, please do reach out to me. I can put you in contact with a friend who does this for a living. He is also an AK member.

Kind Regards,
John

For San Diego, I know there is an audio shop in La Jolla that hosts events from time to time. I've never gone so can't really say much. Other than that, there are a few flippers on CL and that's about it.

Really? No worth while record shops? That's disappointing. That's a conference I will actually have to attend 100%, Vegas I am pretty much done once I present...

About a month ago I was in downtown San Diego for a few days on business. Had a day to see the city and came across a thrift shop selling records. They had tons of records and most were $1. I only had about an hour to browse (it was late in the day and I was riding a rental bicycle) but I ended up buying 8 jazz records after going thru about 25% of the records. I wish I had more time as I am sure I would have found more.

Anyway, if you are looking for cheap rock and jazz records, this place is called Thrift Trader and is located at the corner of El Cajon and 30th street.

Perfect, sounds like it will be just my kind of place!

I live in San Diego there are lots of record shops Record city in Hillcrest I like a lot. Also Cows records in OB, Lou's records in Encinitas. Thrift Traders is also a good place they have several locations, I like the one on El Cajon Blvd. Tons of thrift stores as well. I live in the southern part of San Diego and have four thrift stores within 10 miles of my house. I hope this helps by the way I lived Tennessee as a teenager back in 85/86 in Lafollette. I hope you enjoy your visit. Oh I almost forgot my friend likes M Theory Music shop but I've never been there. I forgot to that Las Vegas also has a Record City store have fun!!!

I thought you were asking about stereo shops. Definitely a ton of thrifts around here. Thrift Trader is definitely cheap but lots of digging is required to find something good. I live right across the street from where their old store was on Iowa and liked to wander around digging after getting coffee from 7/11.

I have relied on google for my past few trips and ended up wasting a lot of time by going to MANY stores rather than one or two good ones, that's why I posed the question.

I'm at the point where I'm pretty happy with my fear and am just focusing on expanding my music collection. I appreciate everyone's input, I should find out within the next two weeks if I am accepted to present in San Diego, but Vegas is definitely on in less than two weeks!

Sorry. My limited experience with Google is to use it as a starting place and a phone number to call and feel out more precisely what sort of music (or whatever else) they have and then decide if their inventory meets my interest level. I would never just take off driving all over a unfamiliar city without a call first to the stores. That would include most recommendations from forum members as well. Hate driving in unfamiliar cities too much I suppose..

Oh I never drive! Part of the fun is using public transit in the larger cities! The upside has been it's been a great way to see a city like New York on your own. I've often ended up in really unique areas and seeing parts of cities I may not otherwise see.

That's true. The only city I used public transit was San Francisco when I went there for a year to work in my trade. The Bart was it for a while, but not much scenery underground (except those stunning women heading for the hi rises). Remember one time riding to work on the Bart and I fell asleep and woke up in Oakland! Ha! The crew I worked with had a good laugh about the guy from Alaska trying to make it in the real world.. :rflmao:
Well public transport or not, I would use every tool at my disposal to find what I am looking for.. JMHO.

If you, like me, consider the sound of a ripping v-8 to be musical, then consider a tour of the Carroll Shelby factory and museum in Las Vegas.

On topic, the Zia Record Exchanges I have been to in Arizona are worthwhile. There are two in Vegas.

Alobar SAN Francisco was where my conference was last year. It was very interesting using public trans there for my hunts, but a lot more fun than renting a car! Great shops too, maybe best variety and selection I've seen. Prices here in Knoxville are the best I've come across though...

DC, hey there's an idea! I'll have to check that out for sure!
