Audio sounding muddy - Marantz cd6005 through Marantz 1060

Hello - I recently acquired a Marantz 1060 and a Marantz cd6005. The 1060 sounds pretty good when connected to a turntable, but sounds really bad when I play a cd on the cd player cd6005. The cd player sounds great through the headphone jack. So boils down to the Marantz 1060. I have tried all inputs on the 1060 (tape, tuner, aux 1) with the cd6005 but the sound has been really muddy low end. Is there any expert advice on something I can do to improve the sound? Anybody else with a similar problem and solution?

is that headphone jack on the 1060 or the 6005?

how do other sources sound on the 1060? if they sound good, I'd be looking at the 6005 for the problem

Have you tried more than one cd?
I figure you have, but I am compelled to ask.
I have the Marantz cd6004 and it is not "muddy" to my ears. I would think the next generation would have similar voicing.
 
Yes I tried quite a few cds and the same issue with all of them, especially as I increase the volume. The muddyness really amplifies at higher volumes. IIt is not muddy when I use the headphone jack on the cd6005, but is muddy through the 1060. The player seems to be fine.

TT through the phono channel on the 1060 sounds great! But can you help me understand how to fix the cd6005 output?
 
that the TT sounds good on the 1060, i think we can rule that out.
if you can get hold of another amp/receiver, try the 6005 on that, just to be sure.

dunno if we can be of too much help fixing the 6005. that probably will require a visit to a tech.

What speakers are you using? Were you using them with a different amp or receiver previously?
I'm wondering if they might not be happy for some reason.
You mentioned "as you increase volume" and " at higher volumes" are you talking CRANK IT volume like past half way or kind of loud like 10:00?
 
A couple ways to check a cd player feeding an amp or receiver..

1.) On back: male RCA-to-female 3.5mm cable > headphones. Checks line level cdp audio quality coming directly from the jacks on back of the cd player.

2.) On front: male 1/4" headphone-to-male RCA cable > 1060. Checks audio quality from the cdp headphone jack directly into the 1060.

Thanks so much for the advice guys I will try using those cables to test things out. I have it connected to a pair of Tekton designs Mini Lures. And yes it sounds good at lower volumes but really jarring at the half way mark and beyond.
Could the sound could be distorted due to too many electronics around the amplifier? Like an external DAC and now a cd player. Could it be electronic distortion? I ask because the phono too seems to be a bit muddier after putting the cd player next to the amp. If so do you think insulation can help? Thank you again for all the help!
