Hi guys
I've just bought a Thorens TD-150 which is coming with an Audio Technica AT-55 cartridge. I can't find any info about that particular cartridge on the internet: is it any good, or should I plan on replacing it?

Thanks in advance

There is some basic information over at the Vinylengine library.

Replacement stylus is still available for it.

It's a good cartridge, but not outstanding. I own its lower-priced cousin, the LM27E - essentially the same body but with a lesser stylus.

The 55/57/59 series, the 51/52/53, along with my LM27E, were A-T's attempt to market something like the Ortofon OM series; long noise, lightweight, intended mostly for low mass applications. I was using mine with my Dual 1268 ULM, and it was just fine until I picked up an Acutex 412, which bettered it considerably.

Original styli are still available, but a bit pricey. stereoneedles has the ATN55XE for $90, 2x7 elliptical, nude round shank. I'd give yours a listen before replacing it. I was happy with the sound of mine until I got the Acutex.

More information on your cart is on page 7 here:

Happy trails,

Dave: Have a pic? Because there was more than one AT55. If yours doesn't have the XE suffix, it's most likely the older, completely different one, for the needle of which the Pfanstiehl replacement number would be 670-D7.

Thanks for all the replies everyone; sounds like it's worth a go.

Lini, the turntable is arriving this week, so I'll post a picture then.
