Audio Technica AT-ART9 with Ortofon STM-72 into Parks Budgie?

Guys --

I want to pick up an AT AT-ART9 cartridge. I have a Parks Audio Budgie that I currently use with an AT MM cart. For some reason, I also own an Ortofon STM-72 SUT, which I have never used at all.

I have been reading specs and posts all day and am still confused. Does anyone know if I can run the AT-ART9 into the STM-72 and then into the Budgie? If so, how do I choose the load on the Budgie? If not, will they work together into the phono input on my integrated?

Much appreciation for any information or shared experiences. Thank you!

The internet says the Ortofon STM-72 has a setup ratio of 1:60, and an input impedance of only 15 ohms. If this is correct, then it's not what you need for an ART9.

The STM-72 is designed for a cartridge output of 70 micro volts about 1/3 the output of a LOMC that does 0.2 mV. What is the output of the AT, somewhere between .2 and .8 mV? Maybe not a great match.

The AT is at 0.5 mV. It looks like the SMT-72 still stays on the bench. I was really hoping to avoid buying another SUT, but here we are. Thanks for the thoughts, guys!

To be exact: the cart needs to see 10x its internal impedance. The transformer reduces the input impedance of the MM input which is usually 47kOhm by its ratio squared. So 47k:60²~=15 Is not enough. You will get trouble at frequency extremes and lose a LOT of amplification. The formula is a bit more complicated but is linear when Ri>Ra:10

Thanks, Jeep!

I am currently mulling over running an AT-ART9 at 0.5mV into a Parks Audio Puffin with EQ off and at 200kOhm and 72db gain into my Budgie. It seems like it should work, but of course I wonder if anyone has any thoughts or experiences with that type of setup... ?

If you’re getting a Puffin try fiddling around with it first. In my system the Puffin alone sounded better than a park’s SUT going into the Budgie with Tele tubes.

Surprised the hell out of me but after a few days I sold the Budgie and SUT, and haven’t looked back. :)

Luckily I have a local shop that will let me audition a Puffin. I have already done so once with my moving magnet set up, but decided to go for the Budgie instead. Now that I am looking at moving coils, I am reconsidering my signal path.
