audio technica at-lp120 scraping sound, metal on metal?

Hi: 1st post, but I've found tons of great advice here. I just bought my ATLP120 new from Amazon. Sometimes when the turntable is spinning, I can hear a rubbing noise, like metal on metal, sort of like a scraping sound. If I stop the turntable and restart, it usually goes away, but soon returns. Has anyone had experience with this type of issue? I'm wondering if this is something that can be repaired by myself, or should I return and exchange the turntable for a new one. Any thoughts / suggestions?

I have an ATLP120 and have never experienced this condition. When you take off the platter and run the turntable do you still hear the rubbing noise?

Amazon will send you one ASAP ..and pay to return the other..you can't ask for better and you should NEVER hear rubbing...something is off ..maybe dislodged in shipping..

If it's new, you should return the table. This is most likely the suspension under the platter. If that's not good, than it can have serious negative effects on the music (though it won't hurt your records). Anyway, Amazon has a good return policy for situations just like this.

Is your turntable OUT OF LEVEL by a fair margin?
Are there shipping screws that haven't been removed?
Definitely remove the platter and check for noise with it removed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I understand, a direct drive turntable with a magnet mounting structure should NEVER be powered on with the platter removed. Mine, for instance, enters a "protection mode" if it detects that the drive magnets have been pulled apart (platter removed with the turntable powered on). Again, maybe I'm wrong, but anyway I wouldn't do that. Your best bet is to return the turntable. It shouldn't have that problem you are describing.

The magnet is not attached to the platter on that turntable.
