Audio Technica AT12s ... with an interesting stylus

Unfortunately I would more guess this is a VM8 needle than a 12S. What I know the 12S has always had a tapered cantilever.

Thanks. i thought the same thing myself as i have one of these styluses and posted about it a couple of years ago and at that time it was determined but never confirmed that as you say is a VM8 which if memory serves me is in point of fact a conical.

I get confused and wonder when i see this link from turntable needles.

I went and looked at mine. Mine is the same color has the smaller AT symbol and printed under the logo is Audio Technica. I think mine must be a VM8.

See from first appearances sake, everything is identical (same blue dot on the cantilever, red paint on the stylus where it snaps into the cart). The only difference is the 12s in gold, versus just the plain "Audio Technica" writing on this one.

I know also that many advanced stylus shapes are mistaken for conical unless a more detailed picture can be obtained. These are the best shots I can get from this microscope, unless I rig up some kind of stand for it

Yes I referenced your thread earlier, the question is: how does yours sound? Does it sound "like a shibata" or does it sound like a VM8? Although I like the sound of mine, it never blew me away like I thought it would, and I wouldn't have labelled it an advanced stylus shape based, if doing a blind test of some sort

I haven't listened to mine in a long while but i do remember thinking at the tiem this sounds to good to be a conical, BUT I have a Stanton D50AMKII stylus which is the conical counterpart to the D50EMKIII elliptical and it, the D50A sounds every bit as good as the D50EMKII stylus so i don't know what to think about my AT.
