Just inherited a bunch of awesome audio gear, and these headphones were in the mix. The earpieces are completely disintegrated, and I haven't been able to find exact replacements, but I snagged some hong kong 3" diameter foam pads, as well as the padded ear pads that modern headphones use, and will give both a try. Something's got to work :)

Anyhow, are these going to be any better than my Sennheiser HD-202s? Kinda hard to tell if they sound good when the pads are so stained and deteriorated i'm afraid to put them anywhere near my head. I know they're not blown, but beyond that, I'm waiting on the pads to arrive before I give them an A/B test.

Thoughts?

Well, I replaced the earpads with some generic 3" pads off of eBay. Was a bit of a production to remove the old pads and glue the new ones in place, but it was worth it. These headphones sounds pretty nice. Lots of bass. They're quieter than my Sennheiser HD 202s (meaning I have to turn the stereo up to get the same volume), and they're quite comfortable. I don't really hear much of a difference between the Audio Technicas and the Sennheisers though.

I had a pair, long ago and enjoyed them. Have not heard them in a long time, don't know how they would compare with more modern offerings.

They're the most comfortable pair of headphones I currently own. I've bought a bunch of vintage phones and I like these ATH-3s very much. They're extremely detailed, I love how they sound, and I can wear them all day. Sound-wise, I'd consider them like an on-ear version of the AKG 250. Same kind of lovely, detailed highs and smooth beautiful midrange. Bass is neutral to rolled-off, they're just not bassy phones. What is there is tight and controlled, though. I'm just beyond pleased with these!
