Audio-Technica Cartridge Question

Howdy folks,

I have the AT-VM95E currently installed on my turntable and am curious if, with this installed, can I just buy the AT-VMN95ML Stylus or if I want this unit, will I need to buy AT-VM95ML Cartridge?

Also, if I'm only needing to get the Stylus, will this be a pretty easy piece for a novice like me to replace on my own? Or will I potentially need to recalibrate / adjust everything when I replace the stylus?

Yes, the ML stylus you linked to will fit your cartridge body. They made the entire new VM95 lineup compatible, so you can upgrade to any stylus in the range just like you're looking to do.

Replacing the stylus is incredibly easy, they pull off and snap on in like 2 seconds. You may want to double check your alignment again and tracking force after the new stylus is on there, but it shouldn't really need much (if any) re-adjusting.

As someone who's actually done that, I highly recommend the ML stylus. I'm taking a break from the ML because Amazon was out of the replacement stylus, so I ended up getting the SH instead. I'll be getting both styli after the new year so that I can switch off.
 
I enjoy the VM95 very much. I have tried the C, E, EM, ML and SH. I currently use the C, E and EN. I feel the EN is the best bang for the buck.

I no longer have the AT95E but I had one that I tried on a couple tables. I didn't hate it, but it was brighter than I prefer. Very decent for a budget cartridge but I didn't love it.

I have a VM95E and also the C and ML styli for it. If I didn't know that the VM95 series replaced the AT95, I wouldn't think they were very similar. The VM95E is detailed and I wouldn't call it dark by any stretch but it never feels too bright. It definitely has more bottom end than the AT95 and just sounds like a higher end cartridge than the AT95E. And it definitely has a bit more output if that's important to your rig. To me, it sounds like it has less noise, I assume because of the greater output.

I'd give the AT95E a side thumb... not a thumbs down or a thumbs up. The VM95E is definitely a thumbs up cartridge in my book. The ML steps it up again.

Thanks that is very useful, I have the ML on another turntable and I have been pleased with the old at95e but as it's time for a new stylus I thought I would give the VM 95e a try.

The ML stylus is great, but does need a bit more care in "alignment" - especially VTA (SRA) and Azimuth to get the most out of it. I had a VM95C plus an SH stylus for it - for a few weeks (bought them just to see how good these really are). Very nice carts, and better than I thought possible at the price points :thumbsup: BTW- VTA is generally adjusted by adjusting the height of the tonearm's pivot and Azimuth is adjusted using the fine rotational adjustment on your headshell. Both parameters can also be adjusted using thin shims between the cartridge and the headshell. I don't mean to overcomplicate things for you, but line contact styli (ML, SLC, SH, etc.) can be less than great if not aligned properly. Properly aligned, they reveal information that you never dreamed was on your records (generally with less surface noise relative to signal level as well).
