Hi tubies...

It took me all of 2 weeks to get addicted to tube goodness.

I bought a grant fidelity Tube DAC purely as a medium to transport FLAC files from my PC to my amp and while waiting for it to arrive I got to reading... isn't it a dangerous thing to do!

Before the amp arrived I ordered a NOS GE5670 5 star as a replacement for the stock tube and rolled it in.

I have since tried tungsol and erriccson tubes and am amazed at the difference in sound from 1 tube to another.

needless to say 2 weeks later and I have ordered an Audioromy 828 amplifier.

based on 1 FU29 VHF dual tetrode per channel and with 6n1 and 6n2 tubes it puts out a claimed 30WPC in from the limited amount I have read it is a solid performer. I guess I could have gone the yaqin 10l for almost the same price but I wanted to try something different and had heard great review about the bigger brother to the FU29.

the amp is coming by snail main due to an oversight on my part but I bought it for $380 us delivered.

I am in Australia and we are "supposed to run" 240v but power fluctuates up to 255! and I have heard the transformers for these amps are actually 220V so I will probably need a step down transformer. I guess I will find out when it arrives.

I am going to run PC>Tube DAC>Audioromy>wharfedale diamond 9.3's (88db) they are very clean and punchy speakers but a bit on the soulless side so hopefully the tube amp will add some warmth.

previously I have been running the exact same setup but with a crown D45 amplifier and you can't get cleaner ss power but it sounds a bit clinical especially with the wharfedales.

I noticed there is barely any info on the FU29 here on AK or anywhere for that matter, so if you have any info, own one of these amps or have even heard one in details please let me know what your impressions are.

I may even bi amp with the crown running the woofers and the audioromy running the tweets but I am sure that won't be needed as I have heard these are a REALLY grunty little amp.

The audioromy arrived 4 days ago and I hooked it right away.

out of the box it came fitted with Chinese tubes and I was fortunate enough to get the new revision the 828a. that has a better input design and better iron.

I can not believe how good this amp sounds... I have burn it in for 4 days and it sounds SO MUCH BETTER than any of the other valve amps I have heard. cleaner deeper more powerful and better separation.

it has well and truly enough power to drive 88db speakers and compares on sound pressure level with a 70wpc crown solid state amp.

I bought a set of GU-29's, 6n1p-ev and 6n2p-ev's to replace the stock tubes and will roll them once the standard ones have burnt in nicely.

I have used russian 6n2p's before and they sound very nice indeed.

from all reports I have read the FU-29's are the best tubes to run in these amps but the input tubes should be changed so I will roll the 6n's in and see how they sound.

I have a couple of friends that have very high end tube gear one has a pair of macintosh monobloc's and the other has a single ended kt88 amp built by a German manufacturer and after listening to this amp they both ordered one!

This is a really good buy for those that are interested in an entry level tube amp.

I would be keen to hear any feedback others have about this amp.. they are currently selling on ebay for $500 us including shipping. I got mine from on9mart.com

I just googled - Looks like a nice amp.
30 watts - Is it push/pull or single ended? It looks like the outputs could be 2 tubes in one bottle. 30 watts is a lot of power from that amp.

its a push pull amp with the FU29's as you mention are effectively 2 tubes per bottle. they are MASSIVE!!! and I think 15 watt is more likely but it really pumps out a lot of power.

its burning in nicely and sounds fantastic. I am running it with a grant fidelity tube dac and a pair of wharfedale diamond 9.5 speakers.
 
sorry I don't have one that matches 100% the closest I can post is the old model. I have asked the manufacturer for one so as soon as it arrives I will post it.
 
I just got details back from the seller and here are the bias instructions for anyone else that needs them. I looked everywhere on the net and could not find them...

start with red circles in yellow box first, marked "1)", place the voltmeter on +ve and -ve pole (-ve pole anywhere on the metal cover), adjust to 0.5V reading.

Then the black circles in yellow box, marked "2)", place voltmeter on +ve and -ve and adjust the reading close to zero.

Please repeat the same procedure on the other side, marked "1b)" and "2b)".

I have a schematic coming for it soon.

The earlier version comes with 6n1 and 6n2 driver tubes and small anode caps and a silver cover. the version this diagram is for is the later version (m-828a) and comes with 6n23p and 6n3 driver tubes and a black cover.

I have swapped out the 6n23p's for 6n1p-ev and swapped the fu29's for gu-29's and have ordered 6n3p-ev's to replace the 6n3 chinese tubes.

I am pretty happy with how it sounds. it soounds better than the crown amp i replaced it with. I think once i replace the nasty 6n3 tubes it will make a big difference.

when i replaced the 6n3 in my preamp it went from sounding harsh and screamy to smooth and tight.

any one else have one of these amps?

I have it sounding very nice now that the bias is correct.

I am also going to have a go at replacing the caps and rewiring the power tubes eventually.

hope this info helps those that have one of these or are looking to buy one.

No a side note, I pulled the transformer cover off the other day and the transformers are HUGE and very nicely wound.
 
I've never seen an output tube that was basically 2 in 1. Very interesting, nice simple design and it looks solid.

The russians are the original but the amp comes with chinese tubes that make nice paperweights. RCA also made an 829B tune that can be used and there are a few others.

they have very low distortion if not over driven, they were designed as HF radio transmitting tubes and are still used today.

The amp is going well and I am considering buying another for my office system as for the price it can't e beat!
 
Hi, Thanks for finding the bias adjustment procedure & schematic for the Audioromy FU29. Did you draw the schematic?

After doing some research on small, reasonably priced Chinese amps, I settled on the Audioromy FU29 and checked Google for posts and found yours and others on Audiokarma and that cinched it. I just ordered one last night from a HK outfit called Prime Amp for USD 443 inc. air shipping.

How has the amp been since your last post? Any reliability issues? What have you determined to be the best tube choices? What differences do you hear between the stock FU29s & the Russian GU29s?. Any other recommendations or comments?

I asked Prime Audio for schematics & bias instructions and they e-mailed me the same as you posted.

Hi Vanya,

the amp was working perfectly till last week the right hand gu29 went red hot and the amp made a burning smell.

i pulled off the bottom cover and one of the resistors had burnt out, I know little about electronics so I dont know how to diagnose it. something has shorted or pulled to much current. the resistor is easy to replace but I will need someone to tell me why it went.

I am going to fix it. its an amazing sounding amp.
 
tdmax, did you ever find out wnat the problem was with your amp? I have an FU29 that looks slightly different to yours and the same resistor has burned out. the amp was running fine for 3 months and then just burned out one day.

occasionally the GU29 on the right would glow really hot even at low power levelsbut after turning it off and letting it cool down it would be fine again. but the last time it did this it made a really bad burning smell and I tool the cover off and found the same resistor burned

( i replaced the FU29's) and re biassed the amp via the manufacturers reccomendations

the resistor is a 1k 2 watt. I can replace it but think it will just fry again as there must be a reason it fried in the first place. I would greatly appreciate help as I know very little about electronics.

I have fixed the amp. it turned out to be one of the output tubes had shorted. I replaced the resistor, replaced the output tube and its working perfectly again!

I have a chinese made Spark 560 tube amp (Spark is owned by Cayin I believe),its have 4 FU29,2 6N1 and 2 AU7(I'm not so sure about the last 2,been awhile since I last look at them).Anyway I believe this is the best tube amp for the money,rated at 60w per channel.I have owned and heard Mcintosh tube and SS,and some other hi end amp,none of them can compare to the Spark.I'm sold on the FU29 based tube amp.The spark 560 is build like a tank and performs like one,I never have to do anything to it,not even try to mess with bias.
I used to have a pair of Accoustat 2+2(very difficult to drive) speakers,the Spark is the one driving those with best result,the Accoustat shut down my 300 w per channel Citation 5.1(in bridge mode).
I'm sure you'll be happy with your new FU29.
 
I have a newly-arrived Audioromy FU29 but I do not know where to place the 6N3 tubes (two) and presumably the 6N1s (unmarked). Pardon my ignorance but what goes into the middle two sockets and to those on the front left and right. Would appreciate info. Thanks.
 
I have a newly-arrived Audioromy FU29 and it is the latest model. Unfortunately, I do not know where to place the 6N3 tubes and the 6N1s. What goes in the middle two sockets and in the outward sockets? Pardon my ignore but I’m new in tube experience and can not read the Chinese manual. Thanks.

Sir, I do not know how to read diagrams. I just have a simple question. On the Aduioromy FU 29 amp, which tubes go in the two middle sockets and the ones on the outer forward sockets left & right? Pardon my ignorance, I’m new.
 
At the Audioromy 828B the inner tubes are the 6N3 tubes.
The design is different from the old design. You can not change these tubes to 6N1 because the pinout is different.
You only can change the outer 6N23 to 6N1.
 
Today I received two USA Penta 5670 from 1973 tubes to exchange the chinese 6N3.
And I exchanged the russian 6n23P to the Phillips 6922 from 1987.
For the Audioromy M-828A this was an great improvement in the Soundstage.
Womens Voices will fly through the room and orchestral music will loose the stiffness.

These two types of tubes are a fantastic match for improvement of the Audioromy.
Changing of the chinese FU29 to the russian GU29 is a very little step foreward.
