Audiosource Amp Three LEDs and Gain Knobs

I was hoping to find an answer to two things I am stumped by with this amp.

1. Can anyone tell me how the led lights are supposed to work?
When my amp powers on, the power light is green for a split second and then turns red along with the speaker leds on the front panel. Is this normal operation? Seems like an odd choice.

2. Does anyone know how to remove the gain knobs on this unit?
