Automatic turntable doesn't drop needle

My Sony PS-LX30 doesn't lower the tonearm when I try to play records. If I turn it off and back on again then it starts working like normal. Sometimes that takes a few tries. It also stops working when I leave it on for a bit without using it. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Has it ever been serviced? The original grease gets sticky and can end up hindering operation. Also, one or more of the capacitors on the power board can go bad and speed and possibly mechanical operation can get wonky.

I just fixed a Technics 1301 that would slow down or stall as the arm approached the record. It needed to be cleaned an re-lubricated and now has no problems.

It's probably impossible to say what specifically is wrong with the table without someone taking a look at it.
