(AVR) No L/R sound until quick rise in volume level

Hi!

Hoping you all can help me with an AVR issue. Yamaha A-800 for reference. When powering the unit on, I get either one channel or no channels producing sound until I raise the volume sharply and to a high level. Then both channels will act normally and adjust with the volume normally. It seems to be random which channel initially works or neither L or R channel work. I factory reset the unit, cleaned the dust, and DeoxIT-ed everything I could see but it still is happening. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Do you hear a click or clicks some seconds after power on, like the sound of relays closing? If so, it could be the relay contacts are dirty or burnt.

Yep, I can hear three clicks on power and another click a few seconds later.
 
I'd suggest the next step would be to secure a service manual, presuming there is one, (or by old fashion power of deduction) establish which one(s) if any are for the output/speaker protection circuit and work on that.

The symptom you have suggests that could be the cause. When you crank up the volume sometimes it's enough of a "zap", for a high tech term, to temporarily facilitate contact through the relays.

Thanks, just downloaded the service manual. Not really sure what I am looking at since this is my first "repair" I've had to do but I once I find the relays, I'll try to clean them. Thanks again
