AVR with reliable ARC

does anyone have any recommendations for an AVR that has a reliable ARC connection? I just bought a 60 inch Samsung smart TV (UN60KU6300) and was pretty excited about the potential use the TV for switching video and passing audio to the AVR (Yamaha V477) via ARC. This particular TV uses the new Samsung smart remote which is very intuitive, easy to use and can drive everything if you set it up the way that i did. Unfortunately the TV recognizes the AVR and HDMI control turns it on / off, it even shows that it's sending audio to the AVR, but no sound coming from the AVR no matter what I do. I've tried a bunch of different cables which are all brand new. I've adjusted the settings on both the TV and AVR and nothing works. I've read that a lot of people have this issue with Samsung -> Yamaha, and a tech at Best Buy told me it's likely due to the fact that the AVR is not 4K compatible, so it simply not receiving any signal from the TV since the TV is 4K.

I have it hooked up with an optical cable to I can get sound out, but I'm back to the remote control juggle which is no good for the wife, nanny, kids, etc. I'm considering giving up on the Yamaha and getting a new AVR so if anyone has any suggestions, that would be most appreciated.

Not quite clear what you mean by/the circumstances of the bold part. Can you elaborate further?
 
in the TV audio out settings, i'm able to tell the TV to output to the receiver via HDMI (rather than the optical or TV speakers) which tells me that it recognizes that the receiver is connected, but the audio either isnt passing via ARC, or the AVR cannot process it because it isnt coming out of the speakers.
 
I hate to ask such questions, but you are using the correct HDMI port on the TV for ARC and also have the TV connected to assigned input on the receiver (looks like TV default is AV 4?).
 
I wouldn't put too much faith in the techs at Best Buy. Not always the best trained (no pun intended). If me, I'd call Crutchfield, and tell them your issues. They have excellent tech support, and could either figure out the issue, or recommend a receiver that would work.

yes i'm using the correct HDMI port. The AVR defaults AV4 when HDMI control / ARC is enabled. I dont have anything physically connected to AV4 on the AVR. I believe that would defeat the purpose of ARC.

on the yamaha, when you enable ARC, it forces you to select an audio input from AV 1-6, which are all analog. It defaults to AV4, no matter which one i choose it doesn't work. I believe its asking to default to an unused analog signal because it's renting that circuit push the sound from digital to analog and out to the speakers. Problem is, it just doesnt work. I think it might be a connectivity issue between Samsung and Yamaha's HDMI / CEC specs. That's why i was thinking i need to try a different AVR.

The setting I suggested to confirm is not part of the input assignment. It''s what tells the receiver you want it to put the HDMI audio out of the speakers.

Personally, I think I would try turning off HDMI control in the receiver then manually setting the HDMI audio and ARC settings (in the receiver).

Thanks, i'll try that, though i think you can only enable ARC on the receiver with HDMI control on, but i'll check the menus again this afternoon.
 
I failed to get it to work with my Samsung TV and Yamaha AVR. Tried everything for hours, called Samsung, called Yamaha. They both blamed each other. I gave up and use a toslink to AV4. The only time I want to pass sound from the TV is for web browsing which I don't do often.
Maybe an Onkyo will work?

I've read stories like yours, which is why i'm thinking about ditching the AVR for a new one, which is too bad because i really like the sound the yamaha produces. Unforunately, i prefer to connect everythign to TV for source switching because of the ease of use and really want to cut down on the remote clutter. I do a ton of streaming and the onboard smart TV apps are great quality so i want to be able to hear equally good sound out of the receiver. the optical cable works ok, but is a bit of a bandaid and still requires an extra remote just for the volume.
 
In addition to trying the manual configuration, I noticed Yamaha mentioned firmware update(s), but I didn't dig in about that. That might be something else to look into.

Oh, and about using the TV for a switch box, bs aware that many TVs won't pass true surround sound from an external source back out to the receiver on HDMI. Don't know if yours will or will not, just advising that many don't.

Whoaru99 makes good points. My avr has had several firmware updates, but I didn't
Try arc after them. I think my Samsung arc will pass Dolby 5.1 from over the air high def tv, everything else is down mixed stereo.
I find it pretty simple to use the receiver to do all switching and never use the tv remote. I use the cable box remote to change channels or use the pvr.
 
In the Yamaha Manual, they state you have to manually turn on HDMI Control, and then Set Amp to "On" and HDMI out (TV) "Off"

Shouldn't be any issue receiving the ARC information, even though this is an older HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.0 device...the exception might be with 4K content viewed through Netflix or another internal source- should work just fine on broadcast

Good luck with your issue- if you decide to ditch the Yamaha, I've always had very good luck with Denon- their last 4 or 5 model years have been exceptionally good!

In hindsight I agree. Was looking through some of the settings on my Marantz and HDMI control does have to be on for ARC to function.

Previous posts seem to indicate the TV audio is assigned to AV4 as it is default).

Does the receiver automatically switch to AV4 when you turn on the TV, or do you have to manually select it from the remote or front panel?

Barring all else, have you tried the nuclear option? Factory reset and start again with fresh setup?
