Aztec Gauguin IIIs for $200?

I have a pair of Aztec Coquettes that I love and came across a CL ad for the larger Aztec Gauguin IIIs.

While the seller is right that they're rare, they're not especially valuable. (I actually got my Coquettes for free as part of another deal with a friend.) Aztec Sound Corporation isn't super well known (Denver-based in late 60s-70s). I had to research them when i got mine.

I offered up to $175 (assuming they sound good), already way more than I wanted to, because I was just excited to see them. But the seller's firm at $200. What do you think? Am I being cheap by thinking they're worth closer to $100? The cabinets need some love, it's a 2 hour drive to even listen to them, and the ad has been up for over a month. I feel like my offer was more than fair, so I walked away from it. But I wanted to ask folks that are smarter than me. Hopefully avoid regrets. Ha.

What would you do?

That ad has been around for months. I think at the same price. I had thought about buying them for fun if he ever came down. it's ebay that causes a lot of these high listings. You can't just believe it if it says sold. I was watching a guy here on CL that had klipsch speakers at $1400 for a few weeks. Pulled the add and ran an add on epay, at the same price. Then a few days later he posts them as 'sold' for $1400. Sure enough-back they are on CL again for a few more weeks.- for the same price. The last price I saw them listed ad was $900

It does not make sense to list something on ebay, then mark them as sold in an attempt to drive up the price. You will pay final value fee, which is around 10% Of sales price.. Unless he had setup another acct to make the purchase, and then just let it become an unpaid item to get around the FVF..

I don't know how it works, but that is exactly what he did.
 
FWIW, these look to be late model Aztecs with improved woofers and better overall engineering. I had a very early pair of GIII's that used a lesser woofer, no port, no adjustment for mid/tweeter, etc.

I'd be all in on those at 100.
 
Aztec speakers have nice cabinets but use mediocre drivers. They sound good but they are nothing special. Resale value is, of course, low so I would pass unless they are inexpensive.
 
I'll be honest, I have a larger set of the Aztec Line (Monet) and I think they are not to shabby. I mean all things considered I've heard some pretty bad speakers in my time but was actually surprised with these ones. Are they end game speakers? No, but they are nice enough to have around and if anything you can swap out drivers that are better. The cabs are really well made.
 
I just sold a set of these same speakers today for 200. I would agree the cabinet are the best thing about these speakers. The grill frames weighed more than some speakers I've owned. Very happy buyer too. I was happy to see them go for 200.00
 
Second time I'm reading this thread and again it took me like five minutes to figure out that you are not talking about Altecs.
