Hey all,

I have some B&O 'Beovox' M100s coming in soon. I understand these were pretty much TOTL for B&O back in the day. I'm starting up this thread to ask whether anyone has any listening expereinces with these and also to document any work I do on them.

I have Beovox M75's, restored by @baco99 . You are likely to need recapping, and possibly surrounds on one or more of the drivers.

But, you will LOVE 'em ;)

Don't necessarily assume that they will need re-capping but, if you decide that you want to go ahead with this, have a word with Beoparts in Denmark before spending any money on overpriced 'audiophile' components.

He sells re-cap kits for most Beovox models although it seems not the M-100s, but I'm sure he will be able to advise on the right parts.

Hey thanks for the tip - will follow that up. I certainly don't put fancy stuff like SoniCaps etc in my recap jobs. I have access to 'decent' poly caps locally, so I typically use those and decent quality NP electrolytics where appropriate. I look at it as anything new is going to be better than anything almost 50 years old (generally speaking) :-)
 
M series speakers were famous for keeping all their drivers connected with positive polarity. But that meant there would be a deep canyon in the frequency response when they used with a 2nd order crossover network between drivers, So they would install a fill-in driver using either a third or first order network with very small bandwidth to fill the canyon in the frequency response. Now if they had used 4 th order crossovers where necessary then the fill speaker wouldn't have been needed, But that would have been very expensive. Or if they had used Dr. Longs patented crossover he developed when time aligning speakers during the same period the fill in driver wouldn't have been needed. But I don't think UREI was willing to allow that at the time. Any way M-100's were fantastic sounding speakers . But we only sold 1/2 dozen pairs or so. People owning 5700's and M-70's were happy with them and felt they didn't need to spend the extra cash it seemed to me. S series were very good, too.

Being European speakers they need help from the room to get flat bass response. Meaning close to the floor with out them being pulled to far away from the rear wall. You may want to shft them in to corners and then pull them out until you get the balance you prefer. We had a couple of customers that bought Mcintosh ML-1 speakers with only the woofers connected to be used as sort of sub woofers to supplement their B&O speakers. They were about the same efficiency at the time and Mac amps had 2 ohm outputs so everything worked out great. One gent was using MC 2300 and the sound easily put anything Klipsch was building at the time to shame. Not as loud for sure, but it was damn impressive sound.
